Whilst Jeremy Brett will always be my definitive Sherlock Holmes Clive Merrison must come a very close second. He plays Holmes with such energy and conviction. Likewise Michael Williams is superb as Watson and indeed is my favourite representation of the faithful doctor and sidekick. He has such a warm, caring almost Grandfatherly voice which plays as the perfect contrast to Mr Merrisons's hyper Holmes.
My Favourite part of this recording? Well it comes in The Norwood Builder when Lestrade points out the thumbprint to Holmes. When Lestrade leaves I couldn't help but genuinely laugh out loud at Holmes laughter and gloating to Watson at Lestrade's error. I will leave that there so I don't inadvertantly leave some spoilers behind as to the resolution.
But anyway all of these BBC dramatisations of the Sherlock Holmes canonical stories are superb and well worth the credits/money. HOWEVER I cannot praise the Further Adventures of Sherlock Holmes as warmly. Whilst they still have the superb Merrison playing Holmes we have a change in Watson in the forms of the outgoing Williams being replaced by Andrew 'Fawlty Towers' Sachs. The change really grates and the performance is too quiet. The other big change is that those adventures are not from the Conan Doyle canon but instead are written by Bert Coules and there's just not the same level of complexity to the case solutions.
If you like Holmes the get The Return of Sherlock Holmes. You won't regret it.
