Publisher's summary

The seventh book in the Tony Hill and Carol Jordan series.

There is one serial killer who has shaped and defined police profiler Tony Hill's life. One serial killer whose evil surpasses all others. One serial killer who has the power to chill him to the bone: Jacko Vance.

And now Jacko is back in Tony's life. Even more twisted and cunning than ever before, he is focused on wreaking revenge on Tony - and DCI Carol Jordan - for the years he has spent in prison.

Tony doesn't know when Jacko will strike, or where. All he knows is that Jacko will cause him to feel fear like he has never known before - and devastate his life in ways he cannot imagine...

Extremely disappointing

There were a number of occasions when I wanted to send this book back. I have read many of her books and watched all of the series regarding Tony Hill. This is the first book I’ve been disappointed with. The two parallel plots were unconnected and therefore the second plot involving the working girl killer was pointless. It didn’t have a successful ending either. Just came to a grinding halt.

The author spends an inordinate amount of time going into the psychological backgrounds of too many lesser characters. The hunt for Vance didn’t really have any impetus. It wasn’t dynamic. It didn’t have you page turning. Of course I wanted Vance to get his just desserts which was the only reason I got to the end. I don’t think he did get his true punishment. That would have been Carole arresting him and seeing him go down. For Tony’s mother to see Vance off was a poor ending.

Regards the narration. All the different characters had the same voice. There was no feeling of a new character or a female character. Ive read a number of Michael Connely books and the narrator manages to distinguish between male and female characters without talking in a high pitch voice. He does it with texture of voice. This narrator was all harsh voices.

I also got pretty tired of the sexuality angle being in so many characters within the book. I am not being anti here, I just think it was overkill and was the authors own personna being portrayed too often.

I couldn’t wait to finish the book but I was a really dull ending.

First book from 7 I’ve sent back.
