Publisher's summary

What is the difference between justice and revenge?

In this buzzworthy new thriller by New York Times best-selling author Lisa Unger, two wronged women on very different paths find themselves in the same dark place....

Claudia Bishop's perfect life fell apart when the aftermath of a brutal assault left her with a crumbling marriage, a newborn daughter, and a constant sense of anxiety about the world around her. Now, looking for a fresh start with a home restoration project and growing blog, Claudia takes on a crumbling old house - one that, unbeknownst to her, has an ugly history and may hide long-buried secrets.

For Zoey Drake the defining moment of her childhood was the horrific home invasion murder of her parents. Years later she has embraced the rage that fuels her. Training in the martial arts has made her strong and ready to face the demons from the past - and within.

Strangers to each other, and walking very different paths in the wake of trauma, these two women are on a collision course - because Zoey's past nightmare and Claudia's dreams for her future take place in the very same house. As Zoey seeks justice and Claudia seeks peace, both will confront the monsters at the door that are the most frightening of all.

LOVE ZOE

The characters in the ZOE line of the story saved me from utter frustration and yielded an end result of really liking this book. It may well be that other readers have the exact opposite opinion. I think perhaps my feeling reflects personal life experiences more than the writer's skills. Regardless, I thought tge author gave an insightful voice to complexities within the concepts of Right vs Wrong in today's woelf. Claudia and Raven, even her husband frustrated me greatly- though the Claudia character only rose to that level in the final conflict scenes. If there is a sequel, I hope it involves ZOE and her sense of justice!

Too many F bombs for me to recommend

The story was compelling. The reader was good, but there were too many F bombs for me to recommend this book.

Justice or Revenge

This is a story told from the points of view of two different women, both of whom suffered terrible acts against them in the past. The story centers around a rundown house in Lost Valley, New Jersey. One of the women used to live there years ago when she was the sole survivor of a brutal attack on her family and the other woman is now renovating the house, trying to get on with her and her daughter's lives after she survived being raped years ago.

I enjoyed this story for the most part. But there were times that I kept mixing up which narrator was telling her story. Their stories had enough similarities that it was confusing at times.

Also, this is a story where I really had to not analyze the fine points of the tale too closely. Some parts I found pretty unbelievable. I know it's fiction and the old saying is 'truth is stranger than fiction' but there were a few 'oh, you have to be kidding me' moments throughout the book.

So, this was an okay listen for one time through but it's not one I'll re-listen and but it is unique enough that I would recommend it to friends to listen.

Julia Whelan was outstanding with the delivery of the story

Surprisingly great

I was a bit skeptical going into this one. The description sounded odd, but the reviews were excellent so I took a chance. I am so glad I did. I could not stop listening. Literally had to force myself to not listen at times just so I wouldn't finish too quickly.

My only (minor) complaint was the narrator- I've enjoyed her narration in other books, but it was difficult to differentiate what character she was speaking as at times.

Overall, this was a great book. Kept me guessing, I was never really sure what was going to happen. I highly recommend!

Really good book

This was a surprise. I bought it as a deal of the day. Once I started it , it was really difficult to pause it. Lost a night's sleep because I just couldnt press stop. Very vivid imagery and narration. I could see this as a movie or Netflix series!!

Lots of characters

it's a good listen. It's twisty and turny but a lot of characters and two story lines that intersect to keep track of. I love Lisa Unger so it's a good story with great depth in the characters.
