Publisher's summary

1666: The monastery at Andrechs has long been a pilgrimage destination, but when the hangman's daughter, Magdalena; her doctor husband, Simon; and their two small children arrive there, they learn that the monks have far larger concerns than saying Mass and receiving alms. It seems that once again the hangman's family has fallen into a mysterious and dangerous adventure.

Two monks at the monastery experiment with cutting-edge technology, including a method of deflecting the lightning that has previously set the monastery ablaze. When one of the monks disappears and his lab is destroyed, foul play is suspected. Who better to investigate than the famed hangman Jakob Kuisl? But as the hangman and his family attempt to solve the mystery of the missing monk, they must deal with the eccentric denizens of the monastery and villagers who view the monks' inventions as witchcraft that must be destroyed at all costs.

This thrilling fourth entry in the Hangman's Daughter series features scheming monks, murderous robots, and the action and intrigue that never seem to cease when the Kuisls are on a case.

Where's book 5?

Magdalena and Simon decide to go on pilgrimage to Andrechs. Can they do it without encountering foul play and murder? Of course not. A plague seems to have descended on the monastery and one monk as died. Simon is drawn in when he discovers the poor monk suffered no accident. When a second monk is burnt to death and a third goes missing, it's time to bring in Jacob Kuisl to solve the mystery before the innocent alchemist is hanged and his own daughter killed.

Scheming monks, golems, and murder. What's not to love? I love this series. It's one of those you can pick up anywhere and enjoy, but when you've started at the beginning of the series, you love them that much more. Set in the 1600's, the language is decidedly modern. The law, day to day life, and medicinal remedies are truer to the times and the plotting is very well done. I love these.

another enjoyable installment

"Poisoned Pilgrim" was well narrated, again. The main characters are a delight to spend many hours with, and the setting was good. As a reader, I once again realized that individuals are judged in this time period by their societal status more than their individual actions. While I did enjoy the characters, parts of the book dragged for me. Some judicious pruning would have been a benefit for me at least. So I did dock the rating one star, but I did like the book.

I love this series so I powered through

This was definitely my least favorite so far. Hard to follow at times and a lot just seemed too far fetched
