Publisher's summary

Detective Jenna Murphy comes to the Hamptons to solve a murder - but what she finds is more deadly than she could ever imagine.

No. 7 Ocean Drive is a gorgeous, multi-million-dollar beachfront estate in the Hamptons, where money and privilege know no bounds. But its beautiful gothic exterior hides a horrific past: It was the scene of a series of depraved killings that have never been solved. Neglected, empty, and rumored to be cursed, it's known as the Murder House, and locals keep their distance.

Detective Jenna Murphy used to consider herself a local, but she hasn't been back since she was a girl. Trying to escape her troubled past and rehabilitate a career on the rocks, the former New York City cop hardly expects her lush and wealthy surroundings to be a hotbed of grisly depravity. But when a Hollywood power broker and his mistress are found dead in the abandoned Murder House, the gruesome crime scene rivals anything Jenna experienced in Manhattan. And what at first seems like an open and shut case turns out to have as many shocking secrets as the Murder House itself, as Jenna quickly realizes that the mansion's history is much darker than even the town's most salacious gossips could have imagined.

As more bodies surface, and the secret that Jenna has tried desperately to escape closes in on her, she must risk her own life to expose the truth - before the Murder House claims another victim.

Full of the twists and turns that have made James Patterson the world's number one best-selling writer, The Murder House is a chilling story of murder, money, and revenge.

Ridiculously predictable.

Could barely finish this audiobook. Sometimes I laughed out loud because the situations were so cliche. Not worth the purchase. Zero mystery, all super tough characters but with a good side kind of thing.

Last Patterson I buy.

I used to love Patterson books, but no more. This story was awful and incredibly predictable. I am sure Patterson just stuck his name on it to sell more books. I won't be taken in again.

Just awful; Juvenile "romance"; Unbelievable

What a terrible book. The characters were cardboard cutouts: the rogue cop, the cold Wall Street guy, the hot construction worker. There was no aspect of the plot that was believable. I can't believe James Patterson allowed his name to be put on this crap. It was like Danielle Steel on her worst day. I was suckered in by a good title and location. What a disappointment in every way.

Pathetic

Hard to believe that James Patterson would take any credit for this bit of nonsense. One of the worst books ever. Save your money. Totally predictable.

Trashy romance novel?

This book sounds no better than a low class trashy romance novel (and I use that term loosely). Really disappointed.

Even too violent for Patterson

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

I don't think this book is for anyone. I've read and enjoyed almost every James Patterson book but this one just drags along and is punctuated with overly graphic violence - even for a hard core murder and mayhem mystery novel lover like myself.

What do you think your next listen will be?

David Balducchi

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Therese Plummer and Jay Snyder ?

The narrator was fine....the story stunk.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Disgust

Disappointed

At times it seemed to have potential, but it became a balloon without air. Disappointing

Meh

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

I probably wouldn't recommend this book to a friend. The performances were good, and the story was not BAD per say but it was thin, a little predictable, and I found the ending anticlimactic. I didn't care for all the blatant red herrings and felt that most of the characters were somewhat amorphous. They were sometimes interesting, sometimes hard to empathize with their motivation. It also was quite a bit longer then it needed to be, I think.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

(Sort of spoiler) I think I would have enjoyed the book more if it had been told only from Jenna and maybe the killer's perspective. The first quarter of the book could probably have been condensed down into half the length.

Which character – as performed by Therese Plummer and Jay Snyder – was your favorite?

Good performances, both. Jenna was a more well developed character than Noah and not a bad female lead overall. She was a terrible detective, though. She jumped to an awful lot of (mostly wrong) conclusions to things that seemed painfully obvious to me.

Do you think The Murder House needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

I think a follow up would unnecessary. The story was wrapped up pretty well. However, another story with Jenna as the lead might be interesting.

Any additional comments?

Patterson and Ellis need a pushier editor. I've never read anything else by either of them but I get the impression this is not their best effort. I would read something written by one or the other, but probably not another collaboration.

not worth a credit or my time

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

I just could not get into the story. The plot had no build up and I didn't even make it past the first couple chapters before I lost interest. Unimpressed...

What do you think your next listen will be?

Something more sci-fi or action oriented

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Therese Plummer and Jay Snyder ?

I don't know

What character would you cut from The Murder House?

I don't like any of them

Any additional comments?

it just didn't capture my imagination or my attention and I am a patient listener who will give just about anything a chance. This was just unfortunate.
