Publisher's summary

In a “sexy, suspenseful read,” #1 New York Times bestselling author Nora Roberts delivers “a slow-burning fuse of a plot that ultimately explodes in a nail-biting conclusion".

Shelby Foxworth lost her husband. Then she lost her illusions....

The man who took her from Tennessee to an exclusive Philadelphia suburb left her in crippling debt. He was an adulterer and a liar, and when Shelby tracks down his safe-deposit box, she finds multiple IDs. The man she loved wasn’t just dead. He never really existed.

Shelby takes her three-year-old daughter and heads south to seek comfort in her hometown, where she meets someone new: Griff Lott, a successful contractor. But her husband had secrets she has yet to discover. Even in this small town, surrounded by loved ones, danger is closer than she knows - and threatens Griff, as well. And an attempted murder is only the beginning...

So sappy

Pablum. Pure saccharine. Completely predictable. Unrealistically perfect characters. Uninteresting. It got lots of great reviews which, for the life of me, I don't understand. This is a romance novel.

Enjoyed it but figured it out too early.

Always love her books. I just wish I hadn't figured it out so early. Instead of spending the book wondering "who did it, "I spent the book wondering how the mystery would be solved. Maybe that was her intent, and if so, she succeeded. I still enjoyed the book immensely.

Insufferable

So formulaic, sappy and annoying.
The performance... I couldn't take the baby talk either. And the stereotypical Southern accents and Southern-isms.
What's to LIKE about this book? Not much. This book is basically a Hallmark channel movie. The story is entertaining enough in its simple and predictable way, but is almost too irritating to get through. I'm about halfway through and can't go any further.

Enjoyable

I enjoyed the book even though I figured it out mostly in the first two chapters.

It sort of dragged a bit. There were times Shelby got on my last nerve and No doubt it could have been shorten. But I read/listen to books for entertainment and I was entertained so the book did it's job. Some people were looking for a straight up suspense, I like romance with my suspense.

I guess I must not have read/listen to the books this book was supposed to be like because I didn't feel this was a rehashed book or a couple of Nora's older books re-done.

It is not a great story, but a decent one. You won't be disappointed unless you are looking for a block buster.

Not a great book.

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

Usually fans of Nora Roberts Romance/Dramas. But I'm not sure this time.

Has The Liar turned you off from other books in this genre?

No.

What three words best describe January LaVoy’s performance?

Good except for Child's.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Disappointment

Any additional comments?

The performance was pretty good. But the Southern accents become grating and progressively more difficult to listen to. The story is less than stellar and so predictable.

Not Worth Your Time

What disappointed you about The Liar?

The story read like it was written for a 5 year old. The narrator was awful with a very FAKE Southern accent. I tried putting it on FAST play but it was still unpalatable. I should have known better than pick a Nora Roberts book in the first place. I don't think any man would enjoy listening to it. Never again.

Has The Liar turned you off from other books in this genre?

Yes. Also, certainly from this author or narrator.

Would you be willing to try another one of January LaVoy’s performances?

Never never never.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from The Liar?

Everything involving the kid.

Any additional comments?

Bad bad bad choice. Yuck!

Like nails on a chalkboard

Between the southern drawl in the baby talk I couldn't even get past one chapter of this audiobook. I may try to buy the book later and see how it fares to read it but definitely not able to deal with the narrator on this book.

Not Nora Roberts best.

The story was just OK. I found the plot lacked her usual suspense and was very predictable.

Good Story with Obvious Plot

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I would recommend it for the good characters and strong dialogue. However, the book's ending was apparent from the very beginning of the book. The fact that none of the characters in the book ever voiced the possibility of it ending this way - really - was not believable and became tedious. So I would recommend the book with caution.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

The ending was obvious from the first minutes of the book. I went through 16 hours of the story to get to the ending I could see coming from a mile away.

What does January LaVoy bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

She does a good job with the Southern accents and female character differentiation. However, her male character voices were less pleasant.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The family interactions were well written.

Any additional comments?

I usually enjoy Nora's stand alone books, but this one had a tired, and over-used, plot that was obvious and she used a plot device that was used in Hot Rocks, one of the "In Death" books, so I saw that coming too.
