Publisher's Summary

Ed Bishop stars as Philip Marlowe in these powerfully atmospheric BBC Radio 4 dramatisations of Raymond Chandler's novels about the cynical, world-weary, wise-cracking shamus whose honesty in a dishonest world sent him down the mean streets again and again in search of some kind of justice. Blonde, beautiful, and wild, Crystal Kingsley had never exactly been the faithful little wife. But when she's missing for a month and a woman's body surfaces in an isolated mountain lake, murder-a-day Marlowe is back in business.
When the body in the lake turns out not to be Crystal at all, it is in fact one of her neighbours, Philip Marlowe can sniff the beginnings of a mystery. Hired by Derace Kingsley to find his missing wife, Marlowe soon discovers that a few more corpses will turn up before he gets to the bottom of this particular case.

deep and dark

this is, i believe, one of raymond chandler's darkest tales for philip marlowe. it is, as always, beautifully acted by ed bishop and the other cast members. once you start to listen to more of these productions, you really start to get a feel for the other actors and actresses, such as tucker maguire, tobey robins, paul maxwell, peter marinker, liza ross, harry tawb, don fellowes, and ramsey williams; they all have very distinctive and expressive voices.
the story and plot of 'the lady in the lake' is convoluted, graphic and quite shocking: a cruel and ambitious woman in 1940's california weaves a painful and wicked web around the men in her life, and she cares little for the consequences. there are characters in this production that are brutal and nasty, and a few that offer some light relief. but mostly, this is a dark, twisted and violent story.... but it's chandler, and it also has an interview with the great man at the end of the play. cracking stuff.
