Critic reviews

“Tully once again proves an unorthodox and effective lawman, while McManus’s storytelling … never flags.” ( Publishers Weekly)

Pleasant background

Not a complicated story. The reader has an easy voice to listen to. There are enough sub plots to keep you engaged and interested but the lines are not so layered it requires all your concentration. Good background for a long road trip

Hilarious and lots of fun

Patrick McManus just keeps getting better. What fun that he has started writing novels! You needn't have read any of his essays prior to starting on his novels, but having at least listened to "How I Got This Way" will only add to the fun: You will recognize some of the characters from his childhood popping up in his novels. McManus made a name for himself writing humorous pieces about hunting and fishing for publications such as "Field and Stream" and "Outdoor Life." Born and raised in Idaho, he writes about what he knows and loves. All of his Bo Tully mysteries take place in Blight County, Idaho, where Bo works as sheriff. Sadly, only two of the Bo Tully series have been published in audio so far: "The Blight Way" (2006) and "The Huckleberry Murders" (2010). Audible: Please get us the rest!

Gret book, Good performance, issues with burning

Would you try another book from Patrick McManus and/or Tom Stechschulte?

Pat McManus is one of my favorite authors. Tom Stechschulte did a good job, although I prefer the narrator for the first Bo Tully mystery, The Blight Way.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Dave the Indian. An indian who's not really an indian, although he's a tracker, great shot, and his tribe (the Dave tribe that consists of a total of 1) keeps trying to put a casino on his reservation (5 acres).

What about Tom Stechschulte’s performance did you like?

Fairly good performance. Not my favorite voice for Bo Tully and his supporting cast, but above average.

Did The Huckleberry Murders inspire you to do anything?

Write more.

Any additional comments?

The big problem with this book was that disc 2 did not burn correctly. After emailing this problem with audible support, the book was reset and I tried to burn it again. The second burn had the same issues. The book wanted to cut out and give an error at section 6. Is there a chance it was the cd's? Not since it happened on the same spot on the same cd (Two different brand new cd's were used. They were void of any seen defects). Was it my cd burner? Doubt it. The rest of the book downloaded fine, and I've used it for other books and music. How about my cd player? Every other cd and the first half of the second cd worked fine. The problem is I can't really try more cd's with the "one burn policy."

Love Narator, not the book.

I had hoped for a cozy mystery set in the west, but the writing was weak--flat and simplistic. The author went to some lengths to make a womanizing sheriff appear to respect his female counterparts, but I found him to be irritating, not charming. I enjoy a little romance or flirtation in my mystery novels, but this was mostly leering. Little to no descriptive language to provide richness of setting--could have been any rural area. Not bad, just weak.
I really enjoy Tom Stechschulte's reading. I chose this in part because I enjoyed listening to him read Rick Riordan's Tres Navarre series.

A few mistakes

Author is either not a gun guy or was poking fun, silencers on revolvers don’t work. But over all a good story and plenty of laughs.

A Fun Murder Mystery

I know that sounds like a oxymoron but if you have read Pat McManus's books you will know it is business like usual.

One of the Best Bo Tulleys.

Great story! If you haven't listen to the other Bo Tulley stories this one is book 4. They are stand alone stories, but it's better to listen to them in order as there is some links. The narration was the best of the series. I wish Tom Stechschulte did them all, although Charles Leggett in "The Blight Way" (Book #1) is a master too. At times, you forget it's one person reading. He does the voices so well, even the women! Highly recommend!
