Publisher's summary

Charlotte Holmes, Lady Sherlock, returns in the Victorian-set mystery series from the USA Today best-selling author of A Conspiracy in Belgravia and A Study in Scarlet Women, an NPR Best Book of 2016.

Under the cover of "Sherlock Holmes, consulting detective", Charlotte Holmes puts her extraordinary powers of deduction to good use. Aided by the capable Mrs. Watson, Charlotte draws those in need to her and makes it her business to know what other people don't.

When the estranged wife of her dear friend Lord Ingram is discovered dead on his estate, all signs point to him as the murderer. With Scotland Yard closing in, Charlotte goes under disguise to find out the truth.

Love this series

The plot of this book begins about 60 seconds after the previous book's plot ends, so be sure to read the series in order. That being said, if it has been a year or so since you read/listened to the last two books, you'll be fine, as the author kindly reminds the reader of the most salient plot points to get you up to speed in the first few minutes. This is a delightful series with Charlotte Holmes in the great detective's role, and there are plenty of plot twists and turns, as well as brilliant deductions, with a hint of romance, to keep any reader/listener happily occupied. Kate Reading is the perfect narrator (I love her rendition of the Pink Carnation series by Lauren Willig) and does a wonderful job conveying the nuances of each character. The is an extremely enjoyable book.

Best yet

The worst thing about this book is getting to the end and having to wait for the next one.

Disappointing but will still read the next one

I was disappointed in the third book in this series, The Hollow of fear. I really loved the first book, A study in scarlet women, and the second book, A conspiracy in Belgravia, really built on that, but the third book was far from the mark. I thought the story idea was great but then the elements of the first two books were pretty much dropped. Charlotte became very un-Charlotte like and un-Sherlock like. It is definitely moving into the romance genre and away from the mystery elements that I loved in the first two books. Mrs. Watson was a barely mention in this book. The twist was un-welcomed. I will probably still read the next one but I am not looking forward to it the way I did and if it is more of the same, I might be done with this series.

Love This Series but story went flat

I had difficulty getting to the last few chapters...not as good as earlier ones. I listened on audible.

Thoroughly Entertaining!

11 hours never passed by so quickly! Truly a delightful listening experience. This series is one to be repeated while waiting for future books in this series. Sherry Thomas creates such believable and relatable characters. I love the suspense, mystery and romance. Oh and there's humor too! Every book I find myself trying to figure out the mystery and have failed every time. Really wonderful storytelling.

Narrator Kate Reading is one of my favorites. I know when I see her name on a collaboration, I'll be in for a treat. Beautiful performance and makes me want more...more...more!

I highly recommend to everyone I know.

Mature Content: none explicit (romantic scenes are always initiated and handled behind closed doors). Sherry Thomas' writing is definitely swoon worthy! You won't be disappointed.

More romance than mystery...

Admittedly, I am enjoying this series in general but it is far more a romance than a mystery series. Not that I’m knocking the mystery aspects, I just prefer any entanglements between characters to be much more subdued and the focus to be on the puzzle at hand. They’re enjoyable, but not my all time favorites.

Too long

Although I like the Charlotte Holmes character, this story seems to go over (and over) the same material for hours without making any forward progress. I found it slow and repetitive, and I usually enjoy British mysteries. This was just a little too slow.

Love, love, love!

This was just released and I'm anxiously awaiting the next book. Kudos to Sherry Thomas for her excellent writing and successfully and artfully weaving an alternate Sherlock Holmes world storyline. Kate Reading also, as usual, expertly brings the characters to life. Whoever made the decision to put Ms. Reading's narration to Ms. Thomas' work deserves every reward they receive.

absolutely awesome

I tried to read everything I can about Sherlock Holmes, even when, in the novel itself, Sherlock Holmes is fictional.... Having said that, and without getting into a huge explanation, I have read every thing there is to be read about Sherlock Holmes and without a doubt.... This novel and book series is one of my favorites

LOVE LOVE LOVE

This was the best yet in the Lady Sherlock series. Charlotte and Lord Ingram are delicious and the story was expertly woven and intriguing. I will be impatiently awaiting Lady Sherlock’s next adventure.
