Publisher's summary

From CWA Diamond Dagger Award winner Ann Cleeves comes The Glass Room, the fifth audiobook in the Vera Stanhope series. Published for the first time in the US.

“I do love Vera!” (Val McDermid, best-selling author)

“Ann Cleeves is one of my favorite mystery writers! I relish learning more about Vera with each book.” (Louise Penny, New York Times best-selling author of the Inspector Gamache series)

DI Vera Stanhope is not one to make friends easily, but her hippy neighbors keep her well supplied in homebrew and conversation, and somehow bonds have formed. When one of them goes missing, Vera tracks the young woman down to the Writer’s House, a country retreat where aspiring authors work on their stories.

Things get complicated when a body is discovered, and Vera’s neighbor is found with a knife in her hand. Calling in the team, Vera knows that she should hand the case over. She’s too close to the main suspect. But the investigation is too tempting, and she’s never been one to follow the rules. Somewhere there is a killer who has taken murder off the page and is making it real....

Critic reviews

"Narrator Charlie Hardwick gleefully captures the grumpy personality, sharp tongue, and hidden heart of gold of Vera Stanhope... Hardwick's timing is impeccable for Vera's honest and self-deprecating humor.... A whodunit further elevated by an appealing and energetic narrator." (AudioFile)

Excellent!

A really satisfying detective novel with a hint of the old fashioned country house murder. I did not guess who the killer was which was a bonus !

The Truth about Writers

This time Vera takes on writers - and mysteries. It's interesting to hear Cleeves describe a writers' circle and the tricks of her own trade.

The mystery is classic Vera, with all our favorites - Vera, Joe, Holly, and the hippie neighbors (this time they are in the thick of the action).

Although I have enjoyed all the books of this series, I do often feel that the books are a little too long and my attention sometimes strays midway. Same was true of The Glass Room, but the mystery is solid and the characters and the descriptions of their lives cannot be beat.

Another good addition to this series!

Most satisfying of the series

I love this series for the characterizations, the local detail and the readers’ portrayals of regional accents. But each book until this one seemed have one implausible plot twist that was a minor irritation. This book was satisfying all the way through.

Very well done

Though I had seen 1 episode of a televised version of another of this author’s books (starring Brenda Blethyn in the Vera role), this was my first direct experience of Ann Cleeves work.

I thought the narration was excellent & the mystery held its interest throughout. If you enjoy mystery writing, this is terrific. Highly recommend you experience this fine match of storytelling and talented narrator. The author is skillful and I’ll eagerly look for more of her work. The narrator interpreted characters so well and conveyed the setting & countryside of that area of England, which is also a key part of this writer’s work.

The Glass Room a transparent mystery

I enjoy a Vera Stanhope Mystery and it's great to visit old friends again. This one fell short although it was well written. I knew who did the crime from the first. Only one suspect had the skill set to get away and hide in plain sight. But I will still follow this series.

Loved it, wonderful characters, and good old Vera

Loved it. In the style of Agatha Christie. Complex weaving of characters and Vera is such an interesting character!

Great Book & Perplexing Mystery

What I loved about this book: in the tradition of Dorothy Sayers, deep deep characters and an atmosphere of evil and menace make for a compelling experience. Ann Cleeves proves an outstanding spell weaver.

Wonderful writer – wonderful narration

Excellent sense of place and characterization done with elegant economy of words. Complex plotting with multiple possibilities and psychological subtleties – – all of which was ultimately sufficiently intentionally confusing that I didn't see the ending as the obvious one and that might be the only flaw in this wonderful story by this wonderful writer- I didn't get a reader's satisfaction that I had solved it before the ending!
