Publisher's summary

On his death bed, Lord Pembroke took great care to try to ensure the future of his beautiful, unconventional niece, Lady Jane. Her debutante ball featured the most eligible bachelors of London society. But when the night of the dance arrives, things do not go as planned.

To escape the superficial drama of the party, Jane seeks refuge in the garden of Rosewood Hall, where she discovers a gravely injured girl. With her last breath, the child beseeches Jane to find another girl, Mary, and to save her from the same fate she has suffered. Lady Jane vows to fulfill this final wish, a promise that will entangle her in a dangerous intrigue and take her from the safety of home to the hard streets of London. With the faded inscription in a tattered novel as her only physical clue, Jane sets out to investigate the region's orphanages and infiltrate London's most elegant homes. Can she save young Mary from a swiftly approaching doom?

Unsatisfying ending unless you're a bad guy!

Too many loose ends with regards to the crime/mystery. Not enough details given to end the story. Example; the cousin, the middleman of the syndicate, the big man of the syndicate, the brother, the friend, the redhead . . .

Annoying accents and anachronisms abound

If you like your mysteries full of patently impossible behavior and read in an annoyingly fake-sounding posh accent from a basement recording studio, this is the book for you. The most mysterious thing about this book is who was walking overhead or up and down the stairs every so often during the recording. The second most mysterious thing about this book is that I finished listening despite the glaring absurdities. For example, a rich woman visits an orphanage where she suspects abuse is taking place, observes the opulent decor and furnishings the caretakers enjoy, the mean existence of the children, the physical condition of the children, the non-charismatic and obviously cruel staff, and smells the most horrific smell of laundry from the poor house, and she still offers to donate money while ignoring the disappearance of an 11-year old girl who asks to speak to her even after through an attic window the lady spots the girl and suspects foul play. Just stupid.

The Girl at Rosewood Hall by Annis Bell

Excellent writing and an excellent reading of it. I enjoyed this book immensely.Ms. Bell developed the mystery and the interaction between Lady Jane and her new husband quite well. I am off to get the second book!

Telanovela

This was melodramatic buy kept my attention. The author had small instances of brilliance, but they were few and late. This was a mess in the first few chapters, but significantly improved as the book went on. The finding of the girl at the beginning darn near lost me, it was so bad, but the author(/translator?) seems to find the g

Predictable

I guess I bought this on a daily special. But I assumed I was getting a mystery. It was really more of a romance novel. Just not my thing. No real suspense, nothing really thrilling. You should have the ending figured out by the time you're a quarter way through the book.
