Publisher's summary

Miss Silver investigates the murder of a great British industrialist.

Though they share a manor house, the Paradines are not close, and their patriarch does nothing to discourage the petty jealousies that divide wealthy families. A cold figure, James Paradine prefers work to his relations, but on New Year's Eve he convenes the household. Valuable plans have been stolen from his office, and only one person could be to blame. He knows the culprit's name and gives the thief until midnight to come forward.

By midnight, James Paradine is dead. Was it the thief who killed him, or could it have been someone else acting on different motives entirely? The local constables are baffled, and it is left to prim detective Maud Silver to out the murderer.

Classic 1940’s estate mystery

Miss Silver is a spinster detective called in when a case is rather sticky. An American Miss Marple. Many characters to follow, great narration

Delightfully disturbing

The consumptive Miss Silver -- she precedes almost all of her oracular declarations with a cough -- is beautifully read by Diana Bishop, a fine voice actress. She imbues each of the characters with distinctive details. The story itself contains one of the most chilling portrayals of domestic madness, yet Miss Silver saves it from being as grim as it would be without her gentle presence.

Wonderful mystery!

I've read several of Patricia Wentworth's books and I was glad to find them on Audible. This is the first one that I've listened to and I'm not disappointed. Great storyline, I liked all of the characters and it kept me guessing "whohunit". I'll get more of these books by Patricia Wentworth read, I hope, by the same narrator, Diana Bishop, who is excellent.

Entertaining and satisfying

The mysteries in these novels are always intriguing and believable within the parameters of the genre but the hook is in the very well written characters and the smooth and artful dialogue. This is a fine one where the listener is kept interested and engaged all the way.

Very good mystery

After such a slow start, I was pleasantly surprised that once it caught my attention, I couldn't put it down. The beginning takes a long time to establish the context and characters, and I still never quite understood who everyone was by the end. But the mystery was intriguing, and the story had a couple of other subplots that were just as interesting. I'm glad I stayed with it. Excellent narration as well.
