Publisher's Summary

Mr. Berger has spent 34 years keeping his life as empty as possible. His job title as a “Closed Accounts Registrar” doesn’t spark much interest, and his cautious flirtation with a woman at his company was cut short upon her engagement to another man. This doesn’t bother him, however, as he much prefers the company of books to that of people.
When a series of fortunate events leads to an early retirement in the English countryside, Mr. Berger is content to spend the remainder of his years nestled comfortably between the pages of a book. But fate has other plans.
His serene life is rendered strange when he witnesses a tragedy chillingly reminiscent of Anna Karenina as a woman flings herself before a train. When he rushes to the scene, she has vanished, leaving no body on the tracks. Berger’s investigation into this event leads him to The Caxton Private Lending Library & Book Depository, where the line between fiction and reality becomes blurred beyond comprehension.

Audible Editor Reviews

Retired Mr. Berger watches a suicidal woman vanish into thin air, an event that leads him on a strange investigation. Irish crime novelist John Connolly spins this mysterious tale with the talent expected from this best-selling author. Eric Yves Garcia's performance, though, is really the big hit. Yves proves to be an incredibly skilled actor, obviously well trained in elocution, pitch, and pacing. His engaging voice sucks listeners right into the audiobook's eerie English countryside. Garcia's passionate performance perfectly complements Connolly's suspenseful storyline.

A note on narration....

Everyone values a narrator that can capture the essence of an authors voice but more often than not we assume what the writers voice SHOULD sound like. Thankfully it is not our job to pick the writers voice; someone at Audible has already filled the position.

Whoever it was that chose Mr. Garcia for the narration of this book should be given a substantial raise and a paid vacation to their destination of choice, all expenses paid.

Not only was Mr. Garcia transformative in his telling of Mr. Connolly's story but to each character he brought a truly vivid and familiar sense of family and friendship to them. We as readers feel as if we know EXACTLY who these people are; as if we got off the phone with them just a moment ago.

Yet, the consistency of overall tone that the writers voice was given was thick enough to cut with a knife. Smooth, soothing, with an almost dry sense of humor that most readers attribute to British authors, Garcia had me laughing out loud at numerous bits which surely would have left me with only a faint smile had I read the book myself.

I would like to hear Mr. Garcia read all my favorite stories.

I could listen to him all day.
