Publisher's summary

In the first ever short story by Retired Delta Force officer Brad Taylor, the stakes couldn' t be higher as operator Pike Logan goes after the first Taskforce target leading a team he can' t fully trust. Commissioned at the highest level of the U.S. government, and designed to operate outside the bounds of U.S. law, a new counter-terrorist unit known as the Taskforce has just been formed, but not fully tested. Until now. Pike Logan has been given a team of operators drawn from the CIA' s National Clandestine Service and the military's Special Operations Forces without any say in selecting the men on which he must depend.

While executing a full mission profile exercise on U.S. soil, a target of opportunity appears before the Taskforce is deemed mission capable. Forced to execute, Pike and his team are sent to Yemen to track their first real target. The future of the Taskforce depends on their success, but when Pike is challenged by one of his own, their clear-cut mission teeters on the brink of disaster. The price of failure will reverberate much deeper than the loss of the target - straight into the presidency itself. Propulsive, compelling, and told with unparalleled realism, The Callsign brings readers new insight into the origins of the Taskforce as they execute the first Omega operation in a relentless and action-packed short story.

This is the Pike Logan book to listen to first

Audible lists The Callsign Pike Logan short story 2.5 because of when it was released, but in chronological order of Pike Logan's life it is book 0.5. Those new to the series should listen to The Callsign first (before One Rough Man). This is before Jennifer Cahill joins the Taskforce.

I write this review on the evening of January 8, 2017. Novel #11 in the outstanding Pike Logan series will be released in 30 hours. The title is Ring of Fire. Of the prior 10 novels and 6 short stories all except the first novel titled One Rough Man have been rock solid 5 star espionage and suspense thrillers. The issue with One Rough Man was weak narration rather than content of the novel. Narrators were changed and it resolved the issue. The Pike Logan series by retired Delta Force Colonel Brad Taylor is among the very best series.

Listening to a movie-not a book

Would you consider the audio edition of The Callsign to be better than the print version?

Why would you put explosions and gun fire in the sound effects of a book. OMG. I listen while i drive and slammed on the breaks the first time i heard the explosion. What are they thinking!! Then the two person narration is distracting from the story, you can't tell who is who sometimes. I was just glad there wasn't a female reader voice in this one, those are terrible! If the books weren't so good, and i had moe time to just sit and read I'd buy a hard copy and avoid the audio which makes you feel more like you are listening to a movie rather than a book

If you’ve listened to books by Brad Taylor before, how does this one compare?

This is a good book. The story was a bit boring.

What didn’t you like about Rich Orlow and Henry Strozier ’s performance?

The whole back and forth between readers. No indication of chapters of the book. its the script they were given. Not to beat a dead horse, but the sound effects have got to go.

This is an unnecessary way to spend a credit.

This “short story” adds little value to the overall Pike Logan series in terms of context or depth, not to mention that to label it 2.5 is misleading. I wish I had my credit back (though I very much enjoy the overall story line).

Too expensive

Audible should not charge a full credit for this short story.
Will not make this mistake again.

...another great short story audiobook!

Audiobook Review - The Callsign - Brad Taylor
In the first ever short story - "The Callsign" - Book 2.5 by retired Delta Force officer now author Brad Taylor, the stakes are high as special ops operator Pike Logan goes after the first Taskforce target with a new team. Commissioned at the highest level of the U.S. government, and designed to operate outside the bounds of U.S. law, the new counter-terrorist unit known as the Taskforce is formed, but not fully tested. They are a team of operators selected from the CIA' s National Clandestine Service and the military's Special Operations Forces. I have read or listened to all the Pike Logan novels. I truly enjoy the pacing of action, the level of detail, the characters, the dialogue interplay, and the thriller/espionage elements. This short story contains these elements in a nice tight short story. It contains the early days of the Taskforce unit and the set up of the regular characters’ makeup. While this short story doesn't create a big ‘ah ha’ moment about the series, it does put a more complete perspective and depth to the understanding and development of the Taskforce and its purpose. Great short story!

Excellent prequel

New to Taylor and just getting into his world. Can’t be read as a prequel but much appreciated after getting to know the initial team a little - it is a “fun little story” as someone said!

Excellent

Well written piece that outlines the difficulties that would need to be overcome to field a deep black unit. It's got it all action, comedy, and suspense. I highly recommend it.
