Editorial reviews

Editors Select, July 2017

When your friend drops a "what book should I bring on my vacation?" poll on Facebook...add comment: The Breakdown. It’s everything I love in a psychological suspense: It draws you in right away, then launches you up, down, and sideways through twists and turns. Georgia Maguire’s lovely English voice is so easy on the ears, and her performance is at once heartbreaking and breathtaking. I’m still sorting out my emotions. Without spoiling anything for you, let me just say this: It’ll make you think twice about doubting your instincts. —Erin, Audible Editor

Publisher's summary

Named One of the Most Anticipated Thriller Novels of 2017 by Bustle!

The newest propulsive audiobook from the author of New York Times and USA Today instant best seller Behind Closed Doors.

If you can't trust yourself, who can you trust?

Cass is having a hard time since the night she saw the car in the woods, on the winding rural road, in the middle of a downpour, with the woman sitting inside - the woman who was killed. She's been trying to put the crime out of her mind; what could she have done, really? It's a dangerous road to be on in the middle of a storm. Her husband would be furious if he knew she'd broken her promise not to take that shortcut home. And she probably would only have been hurt herself if she'd stopped.

But since then, she's been forgetting every little thing: where she left the car, if she took her pills, the alarm code, why she ordered a pram when she doesn't have a baby.

The only thing she can't forget is that woman, the woman she might have saved, and the terrible nagging guilt.

Or the silent calls she's receiving, or the feeling that someone's watching her...

You won't be able to hit pause on B. A. Paris' The Breakdown, the next chilling audiobook from the best-selling author of Behind Closed Doors.

If you liked Girl On A Train, you are going to love this story. The narrator was spot on!

Solid Thriller- But Something Is Missing

The Break Down is a well written story with a well thought-out plot. It held my attention and kept me asking 'What will happen next?' I thought the story came together quite well- and all of it made sense. It was a bit too neat for a psychological thriller and no ends were left untied.

What's missing is general character development. The story could have been more engrossing if I cared more for the main characters.

It's a good story, and very much worth the read. It's narrated perfectly. There is just something missing here and I can't quite pin point it. Paris leaves me less than satiated when it comes to her novels and I wish she'd put a little more effort into personifying her characters- but there is no doubt she tells a very good story with plenty of twists and turns.

Excellent

This book starts off a bit slow, but really picks up. I finished it in two days! I could not stop listening. Excellent twists.

SIMPLY A BAD RETELLING OF THE SAME OLE STORY

This story is neither original nor a mystery or suspense novel. The subject matter has been written about so often for so many years by so many authors that I was stunned to see the praises for the book, which are extremely misleading. However, the narrator did a credible job.

Showed promised at the start, but then...

**SPOILER ALERT**
I enjoyed the narration and the book started off well showing lots of promise. The last three hours of the book included text messages between characters, including each date and time of each text which was a basic retelling of the story and completely unnecessary. Two or three of these texts could have been used to convey the same idea, shaving about two hours off this book! It was almost as though the author was being paid by the word! Also, the story was pretty easy to figure out early on. The protagonist was unbelievable in how long it took her. It held my attention, but the ending was kind of meh...

Not wow, but not bad

There's a turning point in "behind closed doors" where I was like, WOOOW. And I was captivated till the end.

With this book that moment never came. 3 quarters of the book is annoying buildup. And then the payoff is, it's alright. Nothing super amazing.

Was nice hearing author interview at the end and I wish her the best of success on her future novels. :-) looking forward to reading them.

Wow

It may be considered a slow burn but completely worth it. Crazy crazy ending. Paris is an absolute genius. Amazing book.

Predicting but still good

This seemed like a "under contract book" in comparison to Behind Closed Doors. If you are looking for a beach or holiday read... select this one however, if looking for a thriller then...perhaps keep scrolling.

Difficult to Get Into

This book was okay. I was hoping for more than it was, though. Honestly, I didn’t really get into it until the last hour or so. The plot spent way too much time focusing on minute details that it distracted from the overall story. Honestly, it made me frustrated and annoyed with the main character. Of course , it all came together in the end, but it just wasn’t well written.

Disappointing Ending

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

I kept waiting for more, I kind of figured out what would probably happen about half way through. It was just not enough for me.

Would you recommend The Breakdown to your friends? Why or why not?

Meh, not really.

Did the narration match the pace of the story?

Yeah the narration was okay, I just didnt like how it ended. I wanted to see the reaction of the other characters when the main character figured out all the dish. It was kind of slow going until the last like 2 chapters with a disappointing ending.

Did The Breakdown inspire you to do anything?

No
