Publisher's summary

Detective Isaac Bell returns in the extraordinary new adventure in The New York Times' best-selling series.

It is 1920, and both Prohibition and bootlegging are in full swing. When Isaac Bell’s boss and lifelong friend Joseph Van Dorn is shot and nearly killed leading the high-speed chase of a rum-running vessel, Bell swears to him that he will hunt down the lawbreakers, but he doesn’t know what he is getting into. When a witness to Van Dorn’s shooting is executed in a ruthlessly efficient manner invented by the Russian secret police, it becomes clear that these are no ordinary criminals. Bell is up against a team of Bolshevik assassins and saboteurs - and they are intent on overthrowing the government of the United States.

Issac Bell is as Good as Dirk Pit

If you could sum up The Bootlegger in three words, what would they be?

I didn't think I would like any character besides Dirk Pit but Issac Bell did it. I especially like the turn of the century (1900) history.

What other book might you compare The Bootlegger to and why?

Any Clive Cussler Book

Have you listened to any of Scott Brick’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

He made me believe I was listening to different characters buy changing his voice and inflections

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes

Any additional comments?

I took a chance. The book was on sale. Got a winner

An Interesting Story of an Interesting Time

Prohibition was a unique time in American history, and it's pluses and minuses, but especially it's minuses are well captured in The Bootlegger. Isaac Bell was his usual "cool as a cucumber" self. And Pauline Grazo is developed into an amazing detective in her own right.

Scott Brick & Clive Cussler a winning combination!

Where does The Bootlegger rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

The Bootlegger" is another Five Star book in the Issac Bell series. I was hooked from book 1 "The Chase" of the Issac Bell series and the "Bootlegger" does not disappoint! The combination of a Cussler thriller with the powerful and versatile narration by Scott Brick is always a knockout. Give me more!

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

In previous books, Joe Van Dorn stayed above the fray leaving the street fighting to Issac Bell and his other operatives like "Texas Walt" or the veteran detectives "Webber and Fields". We have come to know over the series of books that Joe was a two fisted operative when he started the detective agency; in this book Joe hits the streets with the "boys" and rolls up his sleeves. As he speeds along in the boat to give chase, the tension builds up beautifully.

Which character – as performed by Scott Brick – was your favorite?

Scott Brick is a very versatile narrator. As he changes from Issac Bell to Joe Van Dorn, you will know why I believe Scott Brick is one of the best narrators. His characterizations lift the words off the page!

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Bell is back! As Good As Bond and Twice as Cool!

Any additional comments?

You can jump into the series at any book, I guarantee you will listen to the complete series. Issac Bell is as great a character as the very famous Dirk Pitt.

just fun

when Isaac bell is summoned to a case, the reader, good guys and bad guys are all I for a whirlwind adventure.
in the case, set along the roaring 20's, bell fights against the communists, operating as boot ledgers, and ready to take over the USA.
Scott Brick does an excellent job add bell, and all other characters. Russians, German agents, rum runners, night club hosts, Texas movie stars and others - all while keeping Bell the same calm cool and collected Van Doren Private eye.

great fun, can't wait for the next adventure of Isaac Bell

Stay with it

Allow the story to develop. Interesting insight into a period of American history and excesses fueled by greed.
