I Am So Glad I Got This Through Kindle Unlimited

I gave up about 8 chapters into this book. By that time I was bored with all of her characters. They were all stereotypes from the villainous property owner/ crime boss, to his vapid clotheshorse of an adulterous wife, to the spoiled, foul mouthed daughter. Then there was DS Allie Shenton who started out pretty interesting until I realized that her initial stumble because she was wearing high heels meant that I was going to have to listen to descriptions of her trying on clothes rather than doing much policing. Oh, and she is having lustful thoughts about the villainous property owner/crime boss.

By the time I gave up, about an hour and a half into the book, there had also been six or seven sexual encounters of a rather dull and distasteful nature between various characters. I could have accepted that maybe this was some sort of an erotic mystery if the sex scenes had been more artfully done (and if there had been more than a hint that there was going to be an actual mystery). Oh, yes, and if they had been erotic.

I couldn't ding the narrator too, hard given that she didn't have much to work with. I am so thankful that this was part of the Kindle Unlimited program because I didn't have to feel bad about giving up on this book and going on to something more entertaining.

Very disappointing

I was very disappointed with this book. I thought maybe the reviews we're exaggerated, but know I have to agree. The Detective sergeant acted so unprofessional, it made it hard to believe. The narration was great.

Loved It!

What did you like most about Taunting the Dead?

After losing my sight, i have to rely on others to recommend books and it is a bit hit and miss. Taunting the dead was definitely a hit! My sister recommended this author and im so glad she did. Within the first chapter i was hooked, i loved the characters so much i couldn't switch off. In fact i loved it so much i listened to it twice. Not only did Heather Wilds do a great job with the narrating, the story plot had me hooked all the way through with a totally mind melting twist at the end!! Please, Please, Please Mel hurry up with the sequel, cant wait for my next Mel Sherrat fix!!!!

Slow to start with but gained momentum

What did you like best about Taunting the Dead? What did you like least?

I nearly gave up as it was so slow to start with, nothing interesting happened until quite a way into it. It was pretty predictable.
Once it got going and Allie Shenton was in it more then it improved

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

Less irrelevant detailed sex

Would you be willing to try another one of Heather Wilds’s performances?

I wouldnt choose to do so but if it was something I wanted to hear then I would do so

Do you think Taunting the Dead needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

Yes definitely, Allie Shenton can be developed into an interesting character

Any additional comments?

I was so close to giving up on this but I am now pleased I persevered. Its not the best crime story I have listened too by a long chalk but it improved as it went along and I ended up ot being able to stop listening

This is to me a very new approach to a detective story. Quite wonderful really - it assumes we the audience are smart enough to get the systems, processes and procedures that cops have to go through when undertaking an investigation so this book focuses on the story behind the key players both good and bad. Loved it.
