Publisher's Summary

Salonika, 1940. In the backrooms of barbers, envelopes change hands, and in the Club de Salonique the air is thick with whispers. Costa Zannis is the city's dashing chief detective, and as unknown ships and British “travel writers” trickle through the port, he is a man very much in demand. Having helped defeat Italy in the highlands of Macedonia, Zannis returns to a city holding its breath. And as the situation in Germany worsens, Zannis becomes involved in a plot to smuggle Jews to Istanbul through the back door of Europe. The British hear he can penetrate the continent's closed borders, and soon Zannis is embroiled in the resistance, and in a reckless love affair that could jeopardise everything.

Well crafted story about a Greek Detective and the events leading up to the invasion of Greece during the Second World War. Characterisation excellent, reading excellent.

Normal people in extraordinary times

While the Furst Series of 'Night Soldiers' is not avaulable to Australians, I am having to consider this as a stand alone novel.

The plot or story line may not please seekers of huge dramatic adrenaline pumping gun shoot outs and cliff scaling heroes, it is likely to please those who appreciate what a normal human can face and achieve in extra ordinary times.

The mood setting is good as is the exploration of self questioning and self doubt in being able to achieve even small success.

This is fiction and a work of imagination that can expand a reader's view of themselves in today's world as well as understand a little of the times that is the setting for this story.

Nick Rawlinson reads well.

- Sandy "Love having someone read me a story. Fires in the hearth, rain on the roof, sunny days and surf. Good friends, good food and J S Bach."
