Publisher's summary

Even the darkest secrets can't stay buried forever.

Five figures gather 'round a shallow grave. They had all taken turns to dig. An adult-sized hole would have taken longer. An innocent life had been taken, but the pact had been made. Their secrets would be buried, bound in blood.

Years later a headmistress is found brutally strangled, the first in a spate of gruesome murders that shock the Black Country.

But when human remains are discovered at a former children's home, disturbing secrets are also unearthed. DI Kim Stone fast realizes she's on the hunt for a twisted individual whose killing spree spans decades.

As the body count rises, Kim needs to stop the murderer before they strike again. But to catch the killer, can Kim confront the demons of her own past before it's too late?

Fans of Rachel Abbott, Val McDermid ,and Mark Billingham will be gripped by this exceptional new voice in British crime fiction.

A detective hiding dark secrets, Kim Stone will stop at nothing to protect the innocent. Silent Scream is the first book in the series. Watch out for Evil Games, coming soon.

Critic reviews

"A superb debut by an assured new writer. Blending sharp wit with emotion, I thoroughly enjoyed the ride alongside DI Kim Stone and look forward to the next outing." (Mel Sherratt)
"I absolutely loved it!.... This one is one of the best crime thrillers I've read in a long time, and that includes mainstream authors such as James Patterson! I would seriously put this book in the same league." ( Fiona's Book Reviews)

Great start to this crime thriller series

One of the best books I've listened to this year. I love the cast of characters, Marsons made me want to know more about many of the supporting characters, in addition to my curiosity about Stone's past.

The plot winds its way around and keeps you guessing all the way to the end. The pacing is blazing fast and perfect, I never once wanted to stop listening.

I've already downloaded book 2, Evil Games, can't wait to see what new adventure lies ahead for D.I. Kim Stone.

Austingirl

Read to fast. Sometimes hard to understand. She needs to slow down and show more emotion.

Hmmm...

This was a hard performance to follow along with. At times, it seemed the narrator was speed reading. From what I could hear, the story itself was good.

Excellent!

I LOVE this series. I am finding it difficult to wait for the fourth book (but it's not as though I have a choice 😊). The main character (Kim) is a very welcome change from the average detective. I really hope the author plans more books in this series.

A Good, bad girl, detective thriller!

Kim the lead detective iis a bad ass! She follows her own rules and solves the mysteries in a cut throat fashion. This book stirs emotions as they discover bones of deceased kids from a school. Accidentally? There was to be a digging for rare coins; however people connected to the dig begin to die. How is all of this connected? Well every town has their secrets, and bad ass detective Kim and her team will reveal them. Loved the plot! The narrator was great! Thanks

Irritating narrator

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

The story itself is quite interesting but I didn't care for the narration. I didn't finish listening and decided to read the remainder instead

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

Yes it did. There are so many side stories that I'm keen to finish to see how they all tie together

What didn’t you like about Jan Cramer’s performance?

She read too fast, barely a pause at the end of a sentence. Her voice was monotone so it lacked creating suspense.

Do you think Silent Scream needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

There is a next book in the series

Any additional comments?

For the series, I would pass listening and definitely read them instead. Worthwhile story.

Couldn’t stand narration

While the book was probably entertaining, the inflection in the narrators voice made this cringeworthy for me. I struggled to stay engaged throughout the entire book- not for me-

Its ok.

Nicely read. Nice plot. Most characters were lacking, even Kim herself. Some illogical uncovering of facts. However, saved itself by adding moments of brilliance and heart touching twists.

Overall, recommended.
