Publisher's Summary

Horace Rumpole, the Wordsworth loving, Shakespeare quoting, claret imbibing barrister returns in these hugely enjoyable stories of legal chicanery and criminal derring-do. Rumpole and the Primrose Path finds Rumpole stuck in the Primrose Path nursing home, while his colleagues are planning a memorial service. But there's life in the old brief yet. In Rumpole and the Scales of Justice, our hero is back in harness, defending a senior police officer accused of conspiracy to murder. Rumpole and the Vanishing Juror sees Rumpole dealing with the strange case of a disappearing jury member. And in Rumpole Redeemed, Rumpole encounters an incorrigible recidivist who seems unlikely to reform; but everyone is capable of redemption, even Rumpole.

A Delight

This is a dramatization--a BBC4 Radio production and it is super! I listened to it twice in a row because it was so charming and entertaining.

The human face of the law

These four short plays were delightful. Each with their share of angels and villains shows how adept Rumpole is in getting out of a tight spot and thinking on his feet.

The cast, headed by Timothy West as Rumpole and Prunella Scales as 'She who must be obeyed', is better than just good. The characters come to life and the humour of the situation is brilliantly conveyed.

This download is for anyone who wants a quite, entertaining night in. It still brings a smile to my face to remember it.

Actually contains FOUR stories

Recently listened to Maurice Denham as Rumpole in the 1980 series dramatised by BBC Radio 4. Timothy West does a fine job here, though not as good as Maurice Denham. These FOUR stories were originally broadcast in 2003. Fortunately they use a different theme tune to the 1980 series which was truly awful. [Each story lasts between 43-44 minutes]

- Rumpole and the Primrose Path
- Rumpole and the Scales of Justice
- Rumpole and the Vanishing Juror
- Rumpole Redeemed

John Mortimer is a superb writer; each story is different, witty and well crafted so listened to the whole lot in one go.
