Publisher's Summary

Twenty years ago a young cop named Jacqueline "Jack" Daniels arrested one of the most sadistic killers she'd ever encountered. She has since retired from the Chicago Police Department in order to raise her toddler daughter.
But old grudges never die. They fester until the right opportunity comes along.
While on vacation in the Wisconsin North Woods, Jack learns - too late - that her old adversary is out of prison. He has revenge on his mind. And he's bringing an army with him.
Outnumbered, outgunned, and cut off from the outside world, Jack Daniels is about to learn the meaning of last stand.
This is the ninth Jack Daniels novel, after Stirred. More than one million Jack Daniels novels have been sold worldwide.

Typical Jack Daniels novel by J.A. Konrath

Joe Konrath is a very popular author of several genres writing under his own name as well as male and female pen names. (Konrath has even written the 3 book erotica series Fifty Shades of Alice in Wonderland using the pen name Melinda DuChamp.) Humor, real and attempted, and action are the only really constants in his novels and short stories. He is most famous for his modern detective Jacqueline (Jack) Daniels mystery/thriller series. This is the 9th novel in the series. The novel is action filled and fun for the most part. Konrath's humor is seldom sophisticated and is usually crude.

Rum Runner is a good story which pulls on the listener's heartstrings at times. The humor is mostly either sexual or potty humor. This novel has more childish potty humor than any of his others that I have read.

Like Barry Eisler, J.A. Konrath was a well established author when self publishing started to become popular. Both authors deserve credit for early acceptance of self publishing which has made books more affordable.

Konrath has recently changed from male-female combo narrators of books in the Jack Daniels series to solo narration by singer/songwriter/musician Bob Walkenhorst who is a very good narrator. However, Konrath's writing style of using frequent switching between first person and third person with both male and female first persons really requires two narrators with very different voices to avoid confusing the listener.

- Wayne "I love espionage, legal, and detective thrillers but listen to most genres. Very frequent reviews. No plot spoilers! Please excuse my typos!"

Hated The Narrator

I love this series, but hated that he went with a male narrator for Jack. The previous narrators who have narrated the whole series until this point were the true voices of Jack, Herb & Harry that we've all come to love over the years. What a way to ruin a great audiblle series. I quit listening and just read the book, because it wasn't Jack
