Editorial reviews

Although author Peter Murphy is British and was educated at Cambridge University, his career in law has brought him frequently to the United States, thus he has a clear handle on the country’s constitutional law. Removal centers around the usual White House shenanigans - adultery, murder, intrigue by the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and impeachment proceedings - so the audiobook’s performer, Kevin Stillwell, is naturally American. Stillwell commands the hushed, laden tones of policymakers behind the scenes, making a listener feel privy to smoky meetings behind closed doors. Strong and sexy female leads like FBI Agent Kelly Smith drive this plot that calls the line of presidential succession into doubt.

Publisher's summary

A compromised president, his murdered mistress, enemies foreign and domestic, a rogue shadow agent lusting for power: in Peter Murphy’s Removal, impeachment is the least of America’s problems.

United States president Steve Wade believes his latest affair, with the beautiful Lucia Benoni, is a secret. When Lucia is murdered under mysterious circumstances, FBI agent Kelly Smith is called to investigate. As he dives deeper into the case, he uncovers links between Lucia, a hostile foreign power, a group of vicious white supremacists, and a shadowy high-placed Washington figure known only as “Fox.”

As Wade continues to deny the affair, the press gets on the trail and latches onto the sensational breaking story with increasing tenacity. Because of the national security implications, there are demands in Congress for his impeachment. Vice President Ellen Trevathan should, by law, take power, but “Fox” and his associates have other plans. As time runs out, Kelly may hold the only key to preventing a coup d’etat and nothing short of civil war.

Stunning Suspense and Political Intrigue

Once I got into this novel I could not put it down. We are privy to the inner workings of the FBI, Secret Service, White House, and even the Washington Post through believable characters. The political intrigue is exceptional, centered around the inevitable impeachment of a popular President.

There is an element of a far fetched and unbelievable conspiracy that caused me to drop this to a 4 star novel. However, much of the novel is believable.

Kevin Stillwell is excellent as the narrator.
