Publisher's Summary

In her hey-day, ex FBI agent, Brigid Quinn, not only worked serial killer cases but became their prize. Small and blond, from a distance she looked vulnerable and slight...the perfect bait to catch a killer. But as Quinn got older, she realised she needed to find a protégé, a younger field agent to take her place. So Quinn trains a 22 year old and lets her loose in the field. The plan works. Until the Route 66 killer not only takes the bait, but kills the bait.
Years on, Quinn is trying to move past the fact that she has a young woman's death on her conscience. She's now the perfect Stepford Wife - until she gets a knock on her door. The girl's body has finally been discovered. Quinn is pulled back into the case and the more she learns about the killer the more she comes to believe, despite the overwhelming forensic evidence to hand, that they have the wrong man.

Kinsey Milhone at 58???

Brigid Quinn will remind you of Kinsey Milhone at 58 (which is about how old she would be about now), the same sacastic look at life, the same wise cracks, the same dislike of children and the same disregard for things like rules, regulations and the law! (The fact that Judy Kaye also reads the Kinsey Milhone books does help with the similarity.)

An enjoyable book, despite some glitches (I lost the thread on how Brigid finally concluded who the killer was and a couple of other times I said to myself, "wait, how did that happen?"), but definitely worth your time--especially if, like me, you are a woman of a certain age and would like to read about a gray-haired woman kicking some serious butt!

Judy Kaye continues to be one of my favorte readers and she does another great job with this book.

Brilliant narration

I very much enjoyed this audio book and thought the voice of the narrator was perfect for Quinn. I do not want to give anything away but my only slight dissatisfaction with the story was the reasons for her going it alone both at the beginning of the story and at the end, which seemed to me a little flimsy. The scene at the end was not entirely satisfactory as the perpetrator seemed to act out of character. However these were very minor quibbles in an excellent story which kept me guessing until the end.

Boring Difficult to comprehend plot & conclusions

I was so looking forward to reading this as the summary seemed so interesting. I have had it on my reading list for ages and finally got it.
On a positive note I will say the narrative was great and really aided the story.
However the story lets this down completely. The idea of an older female detective was very appealing. The story dragged on. Some of the outcomes came out of nowhere and only went to confuse the plot. I did stick with it as I hoped it would get better. It did come together in the end but not worth it in my opinion. It may be of interest to some readers but not for me I'm afraid I will be asking Audible for a refund on this one.
