My life was going just fine by most standards. I ran a successful business in a tight-knit magical community, and lived just blocks from a beautiful lake and series of hiking trails. Then Selene showed up. According to some magical code I inherit my aunt's ancient familiar; a grumpy ten-pound cat with a broken filter. She fancies herself something of a saber-toothed tiger, and claims to have wrestled the thread of her ninth life from the hands of the Fates themselves—although, I'm pretty sure that last part isn't true. Almost positive.

Offered a short-term contract, he lands on the Hebridean island of Harris to investigate obscure animal bones. Quickly dismissing the unicorn skull as a thinly disguised fake, he can’t deny there’s something unusual about these bones. Baited by rumors of a majestic tusked horse roaming the uplands, Gill begins to suspect someone is manipulating him. Publisher's summary
There's something special about Max. He may look like your regular ginger flabby tabby, but unlike most tabbies, he can actually communicate with his human, reporter for the Hampton Cove Gazette Odelia Poole. Max takes a keen interest in the goings-on in their small town, by snooping around with his best friends Dooley, a not-too-bright ragamuffin, and Harriet, a gorgeous white Persian. Their regular visits to the police station, the barbershop, and the doctor's office provide them with those precious and exclusive scoops that have made Odelia the number-one reporter in town.
But when suddenly the body of a best-selling writer is discovered buried in the last Long Island outhouse, and a new policeman arrives in town to solve the murder, it looks like things are about to change in Hampton Cove. Detective Chase Kingsley doesn't take kindly to nosy reporters like Odelia snooping around his crime scene or interviewing his suspects. And to make matters worse, he's got a cat of his own in Brutus, a buff, black bully, who, just like his owner, likes to lay down the law.
Soon Brutus isn't just restricting access to the police station, but he's putting the moves on Harriet, breaking up the band.

Story
When Mattie Winston catches her husband, Dr. David Winston, receiving some very special loving care from RN Karen Owenby, she quits her job and moves out. Mattie's best friend, Izzy, offers her a place to stay and suggests she'd be a natural as deputy coroner. Now, instead of taking patients' pulses, Mattie's weighing their hearts and livers. But Mattie's first homicide call turns out to be for none other than Nurse Karen, and even though she saw her ex in a heated argument with the newly deceased the night before, she refuses to believe David could be a killer.

Humorous and entertaining
I loved this humorous cosy mystery in which Odelia’s cat, Max, and his feline friends help her solve a murder. Not only is the story an entertaining murder mystery but the anthropomorphization of the cats is well written and totally hilarious. It had me laughing out loud. The narrator really brought both the human and animal characters to life, bringing out the sarcasm and humour with his tone and intonation. I also enjoyed the interactions between the somber new police officer, Chase, and Odelia. I will look forward to seeing how their relationship, and their cats, will develop in future books.

Interesting new main character...
Nic Saint has crafted a new series with an interesting original premise. One of the main characters is a common house cat. Joe Hempel does a wonderful job of bringing it all to life. I’m looking forward to the next in the series when it is released. If you’re a cozy mystery fan, you want to miss this one.

really awful !
not at all what I expected... the dialogue comes from the cat, which was not mentioned in the book description. Also, I tried to get past the all too frequent "bathroom" references, but had to quit at the 1 hour 15 minute mark and make a return on this book !!!!

Funny, Entertaining Cozy Mystery
Another light hearted cozy mystery to relax this weekend. I like picking cozy mysteries that have dogs, cats, horses in them and this story has Odelia Poole that can talk to cats and gets a lot of help from her tabby cat, Max, Dooley and Harriet writing a story for the Hampton Cove Gazette. Max likes to check out what is going on in their small town and does a lot of snooping with his best friend Dooley, a not-too-bright ragamuffin, and Harriet, a gorgeous white Persian.
There is a body of a bestselling writer discovered buried in the last Long Island outhouse, and a new policeman arrives in town to solve the murder, it looks like things are about to change in Hampton Cove. There is a new Detective Chase Kingsley who doesn’t take kindly to nosy reporters like Odelia snooping around his crime scene or interviewing his suspects and he’s got a cat of his own in Brutus, a buff, black bully, who, just like his owner, likes to lay down the law. There looks like there might be a romantic connection in the future for Odelia and Chase but you will have to read or listen to the audiobook.
