Publisher's Summary

Twin boys grow up in the same family, in the same town. Dramatically different, they become bitter enemies, even as children: one good, one bad. One leaves his peaceful hometown, but when all else fails, the prodigal son returns twenty years later. The reunion of brothers, sweet and healing at first, exposes shattering revelations of good and evil. Number-one New York Times bestselling author Danielle Steel tells a brilliant, suspenseful story of suspicion, betrayal, and a life-and-death struggle for survival. Which twin is good, and which is evil as the tables turn again and again?
In a matter of days, Peter McDowell loses everything he has worked so hard for - his wealth, his property, his livelihood as a star investment banker. And then it gets worse. The stock market crash not only plunges Peter into joblessness, it causes a rift in his marriage that he cannot repair. Stripped of everything, he has only one place to retreat to: a lakeside cottage he inherited from his parents, who left most of their modest estate to Peter's twin. With no other choice, the prodigal son goes home.
A beloved small-town doctor, a devoted family man, and a pillar of his community, Michael McDowell serves others without regard to personal gain. Only Peter knows how Michael manipulated their parents when the boys were young, ultimately driving Peter away. At first he dreads seeing Michael again. But to his surprise, their reunion is tender and real. Only later, as Peter mulls over his late mother's journals, does the truth begin to emerge, as realization and panic set in. Who is his twin? Is the fa├žade real, or does something terrifying lie beneath? Imagination or a reality too terrifying to believe?
In a race for time, Peter throws caution to the winds to find the truth. What he discovers will change their lives, the lives of their children, and an entire town forever.

....and they lived happily ever after

Is there anything you would change about this book?

definitely the narrator. Maybe he couldn't relate to the book well. It was a slow and studied read, as if to a young person - a child! Well, perhaps the story was a bit like a fairytale; single dimensional and predictable. While I thought the storyline OK, the telling was of it by Danielle Steele was poor. Phrases used over and over again become annoying and the writing was as basic as you can get.

Any additional comments?

If you like your stories basic because too many sub plots confuse you, then this tale is for you, enjoy!! I won't be buying anymore DS.

I really like mysteries with a good serving of suspense on the side that keep you wondering right to the end. However, I won't say no to any entertaining and well written book which has been read by an excellent narrator."

Blah....where's the love?

Although I am somewhat of a fan of Danielle Steele when I need a break from my preferred legal thrillers, I didn't need this much of a break. The unabridged version of this book was way too long. The first few hours was spent developing the characters. However it could have been done in 30 min. I would have loved to see more evidence of the relationship between William and Peter with more twisted drama. More of those "I didn't see that coming" devious behavior. There was just no concrete to cause the problems over blaming each other for problems as most children are guilty of this. I waned deeper serious problems popping up. One brother the saint and one the devil. Just opposite of how the book starts. No romance, affairs .... To clean for this author.

I'll think twice before I listen to any of her "romance" novels. If this was a try at something more tautly, nah. I'll pass.
