During Jane Avery’s shady childhood, truth was always a moving target. Since then, she’s learned that colorful fictions can clean up a lot of life’s messes - and she learned from the best. Her mother, Alexis Avery, is the most imaginatively duplicitous private eye in Denver. When the mother of invention goes missing, Jane knows that only her acquired skills of deceit can solve the mystery.
It’s what aspiring lawyer Jane doesn’t know that’s left her blindsided: for starters, Alexis's latest client - a sleazy and deadly gazillionaire architect whose exploits keep the tabloids in business - and her mother's two-year affair with fellow PI Paul Gladstone. Sure, Alexis has carved out a niche for danger. But this investigation is leading Jane down a rabbit hole of kidnapping, bribery, blackmail, hired assassins, and murder.
Maybe Jane doesn’t know her mother at all. Maybe to find her, Jane has to face the truth. She just hopes she can recognize it when she sees it. It could save both their lives.

FANTASTIC, HILARIOUS and SARCASTIC!!!!
Cynthia St Aubin is an author I would never have considered purchasing one of her books before now. She is known for writing humorous witch mysteries and paranormal psychologist books. Not my thing!
This title caught my attention and once I verified it was without witches, vampires and such, I decided to give it a try.
The protagonist in this book is a witty, smart, sarcastic newly graduated from law school woman. She's a smart aleck with hilarious comments or thoughts throughout (example: There are a few things I know I'm good at: lying, giving blow jobs and memorizing and regurgitating obscure legal terms.).
The publisher's summary gives a good description so I won't elaborate.
This is a really fun and engaging book.

I enjoyed this outrageously humorous mystery!
Private Lies is the first novel in the Jane Avery mystery series. Jane Avery is a recent law school graduate who finished second in her class by 0.3 point only because the young woman who finished first was providing sexual favors for the dean. Jane's mother Alexis is a Denver PI who has a rather unconventional parenting style. Alexis appears only by reference in this novel. Author Cynthia St. Aubin is well known for her paranormal novels, my least favorite fiction genre. The author's style is light and humorous. In this novel she excels at her very creative use of vulgar slang words and terms. Private Lies has an excellent plot and wonderfully vivid characters. I had never listened to a book narrated by Amy Landon who did a great job with Private Lives.
