Publisher's summary

A 40-year-old skeleton is found encased in a concrete slab at a recently decommissioned nuclear energy site. It becomes a case for the Vermont Bureau of Investigation (VBI) and its leader, Joe Gunther, since they have the resources and the ability to investigate an old, very cold, missing persons case that has now been reclassified as murder. The victim was Hank Mitchell, and Gunther must chase down old rumors and speculations. Who benefited from his death and the disappearance of his body? And was his death somehow tied to New York City mafia money being laundered through the construction project?

But what seems the coldest of cold cases roars back to life when one of the central figures in this mystery is shot to death, right after speaking with Gunther. And when a young police officer - the son of VBI investigator Lester Spinney - is kidnapped, is it meant to be a warning to the VBI team to drop the case?

After all these many years, the truth behind the murder still has to the power to kill, and it's up to Gunther and his team to capture the living and finally put the dead to rest.

Fun Joe Gunther series with a couple of unexpected twists

I’ve given up trying to read these in order. I’ve been a fan ever since the first book since this is set near family simmering spot of generations where sometimes the truth of what goes on is as strange as fiction. But I think his recent novels are much better written, especially in terms of dialogue and lots containing interesting psychological twists. . In this case helped by an excellent narrator. Fun story which let me hooked until the ending

Another Detective Story

If one likes detective stories with hints of mob touches, one should read this book, but if one listens for seat grabbing excitement, go somewhere else.

Another Great Gunther book

Yet another great book by Archer Mayer! I really enjoy all of his Joe Gunther books read by Tom Taylorson. Joe and his team work so hard to get the bad guy in every book, as well as Joe and his hospital visits during each case! I really think Joe found a Gem when he started dating Beverley, she seems like a much better fit for him than Gail was. This story hit on New York again and the mafia, you will really enjoy this book. I highly recommend you listen to it.

Smart detective but…..

Many authors paint their main characters as larger than life with amazing abilities to handle physical or combat situations. While I appreciate that Joe is human, I’ve come to expect that he will likely end up in the hospital no matter who he is up against in a confrontation.
I enjoyed the book though, especially since Tom Taylorson seems to have remembered his previous voice characterizations. It’s an interesting phenomenon that happens listening to books and expecting characters to sound a certain way and if they don’t, then for me at least, the book is less enjoyable.

This series has gone on too long.

The longer this series has gone on, the more unlikeable Joe Gunther and his team have become. And the less regard for the law they show. I was hoping Joe would be a good influence on Willy. Instead, Willy diminished Joe and Sam. I find myself rooting against them.

Good mystery again

No big twists or turn, but a well thought out progressive mystery. And I enjoy this original reader.

So good!

I have lived these Joe Gunther stories all along , especially when Tom Taylorson is reading. This story may be one of my favorites. Very intriguing storyline and there’s a lot of my favorites, Willie and Lester. Thank you Mr Mayor!
