Publisher's summary

Edgar Allan Poe is the undisputed "Father" of the Detective story and his Detective C. Auguste Dupin set the stage for eccentric, logic-wielding sleuths like Sherlock Holmes and Hercule Poirot. This is the first audio collection of Poe's detective stories, plus one non-Dupin detective tale, "Thou Art the Man". Celebrity narrator Bronson Pinchot delivers amazing performances of "The Murders in the Rue Morgue", "The Mystery of Marie Rogêt", "The Purloined Letter", and "Thou Art the Man".

Wordy

I wanted a more condenced version, I guess I knew the story line and wanted to be refreshed.

Stop The Music!

I wonder if the companies that produce these recordings have any understanding of their customers?

Good reading by Bronson Pinchot, but badly marred by the insertion of what I guess is supposed to be "creepy atmospheric" music at the beginning and end of each story. I do not understand this practice, and I don't know of anyone who is a regular listener who thinks it adds anything but annoyance to these productions.

This collection has the three Dupin stories, and also includes the very little known "Thou Art Man," which is not a Dupin story at all. A better selection might have been "The Gold Bug" which is a "Dupin" story, but with "Dupin" changed into William Legrand.

Disappointed

I have as really looking forward to this book I love mystery. The narrator is horrendous, I understand what he was trying to do with his accent but it just doesn’t hit. You’re definitely better off finding a different version.

Balki does Poe, but better

Except for the faux French accent, which is fine although sometimes distracting, the performance was enjoyable. Not Balki, but yet that is what drew me to this performance. Because I’m a Perfect Stranger’s fan. (You children should look it up.)

As for Poe, his work is timelessly dark like delicious rich chocolate...with a touch of arsenic.

Come for the story, stay for the performance, but wince at the overuse of music and the slightly grating French accent.

It is still an enjoyable time.

But seriously...could the people mastering these please cut back on the music a bit? PLEASE?

Please don't buy this audiobook, it's very bad

This is definitely a very bad audiobook, in fact the narrator, Mr.Pinchot, simulates a kind of French accent, that sounds terrible and it's totally annoying. I understand that he wants to mimic the main character of the novels, Mr. Dupin, but unfortunately the final result is very bad. It sounds very odd, please don't buy this audiobook.

Incomprehensible narration.

Soporiphic in English and incomprehensible in the mock French accent of duPain., the name ration is appalling. Try as I might, I could not bear anymore than the first one and a half chapters. Apologies to EAP.
