Publisher's summary

From New York Times and number one international best-selling author Linwood Barclay comes a new, stand-alone blockbuster thriller that spins off from the events of the explosive Promise Falls trilogy.

If you made a mistake that took someone's life, you'd remember it...wouldn't you?

After a tragedy rocks the community of Promise Falls, Cal Weaver is asked to investigate the threats being made to the accused's family. He's heard all about it on the news: the young man who drank too much, stole a Porsche, and killed a girl, and who claimed afterward not to remember a single thing. The whole town is outraged that he got off lightly, but for reasons Cal can't explain, he accepts the job. Then Cal finds himself caught up in a vicious revenge plot, chasing someone set on delivering retribution. In Cal's experience, it's only ever a matter of time before threats turn into action....

A gripping thriller packed with scandal, from the master of the twist you never saw coming.

Critic reviews

"A tough-minded crime novel about the dangers of vigilantism.... Real crimes, unspeakably nasty ones, including murder, figure in this well-built novel." (The New York Times Book Review)

"Fans know to expect a twist from Linwood Barclay and they get more than one here. Those of us hooked on [Promise Falls] can hope that trilogy or no, Cal and the town make another appearance at some point." (The Globe and Mail)

"Billed as a stand-alone spinoff of Barclay's Promise Falls trilogy, the new book has a stripped-down, tautly focused quality.... Barclay's latest small-town thriller is one of his best." (Kirkus Reviews)

Barclay Does NOT Disappoint 5-Stars!

Linwood Barclay’s New book “Parting Shot” is a gripping suspense thriller, totally packed with scandal, intrigue, mystery, history, and a twist you will not see coming! I couldn't stop listening. Barclay is my favorite author, I can’t say enough about his writing, character development and storylines. Barclay never disappoints and in Parting Shot he’s once again show us why he is the master at what he does. I highly recommend!!!!!

Different narrators than prior Promise Fall books

After listening to the first three books in the series, I was surprised to hear new narrators for Book 4. Unfortunately, the new narrators’ approach to the reading essentially creates new characters. The story is also a bit more forced than the prior Promise Falls books (which is saying something!). Maybe this would have worked better as a stand-alone novel as very little from the prior 3 books is central to this one.

Awesome!

I love all of Linwood Barclays books. The only downside is the cussing is way over the top. Other than that he really brings all the characters to life.

Another excellent book

Not sure why some people complained about narration. It was perfectly done. Story kept you on edge of your seat. Great characters. Loved it

Narration issues on a decent story

The book, like the previous in Barclay's seties, is a solid mystery. Whichever narrator performed the storyline for Cal Weaver does an excellent job. I'm wondering how and why this performer was paired with gentleman who read the Detective Duckworth storyline. That performance was on par with a teenage boy reading awkwardly aloud during a highschool lit class. Unnatural pauses break up sentences and inflection was uncomfortable. Complete contrast to the better performer. Barclay would be better served by sticking to just the Cal narrator in the future.

Great story - painful narration

As always, this author wrote a great story and HALF of the narration was great too. The first person portion was really well done but the third person portion was almost painful to listen to at times.

My favorite of his books, at least so far

This book was really good, but I did a lot of crying. I hated the ending though.

A little disappointing

Loved his previous books. This one was a little disappointing. Not his best Promise Falls story

A favorite author

Great story teller. I like all of his books. The narrators were so similar that I couldn't tell them apart, but it was done well.
