I remember reading these early adventures of Dirk Pitt when I was in my late teens/early twenties and was really looking forward to listening to them as audiobooks. I was so surprised at how sexist and weak the storylines were. Scott Brick is great as always, but I will be returning these early stories for something better.
Dirk Pitt is a sort of James Bond with an aqualung.
It’s a few years since I’ve read a Clive Cussler novel but in the past I’ve always enjoyed the swashbuckling antics of the lead characters and the storylines revolving around some sunken wreck and various gangs of villains.
This one is along the same lines, fairly formulaic in style but suspenseful and exciting for all that.
In places though I found it uneasy reading. In light of current news accounts of males in positions of power acting inappropriately, the lead character is written displaying many characteristics and actions towards women that are frowned on today.
But that aside it was well read and kept the interest going to the end.
Clive Cussler still writes a good yarn.
