Publisher's summary

An electrifying new thriller series for listeners who love Vince Flynn and Brad Thor! Former marine officer Matthew Betley introduces fearless soldier Logan West in this action-packed, globe-trotting, edge-of-your-seat debut.

Former Marine Force Reconnaissance officer Logan West emerges from a blackout after drinking away the worries of his ruined marriage and PTSD, an all too familiar scene for the recovering alcoholic. But he wakes to more than a killer hangover: A professional mercenary has been sent to capture him. After an embattled showdown, Logan impulsively answers the dead man's ringing phone, triggering a hasty rescue of Logan's estranged wife and a global race against the clock to track down an unknown organization searching for an Iraqi flag central to a planned attack in the Middle East - one that will draw the US into a major conflict with Iran.

Logan and John Quick, Logan's former platoon sergeant who has also been targeted by these shadowy mercenaries, are contracted as "consultants" to assist the FBI as part of a special task force led by Logan's close friend. From the plains of the Midwest to the Alamo and mansions in Northern Mexico to the war-torn Al Anbar province, the battles build in scale and scope and pit an international team against mercenaries and former Special Forces operators employed by the world's largest private security contractor, whose owner has a shadowy personal vendetta of his own.

Meanwhile Logan is battling his own demons, unable to shake the trauma of the ambush that his Force Recon unit suffered at an insurgent torture compound in Fallujah in 2004. Mixing thrilling, you-are-there fight scenes with high-stakes tactical maneuvers and complex, fully realized characters, Overwatch is up to the minute and impossible to pause.

Great opening; downhill from there!

The first chapters of Overwatch are outstanding. The next chapters involve an incursion into Mexico; these are excellent. Then comes Iraq where the author makes the error of substituting more action for less suspense. Overall the novel is just okay, but could have been much better. This is the first novel in an espionage/military thriller series. The series has promise.

repetitive

the story is creative and captivating, but the action sequences get very repetitive. Betley does a good job with details of settings, but has a hard time describing the mindset of someone with PTSD.

What a difference a few new twist make!

First off there will be another book, friends, earned trust, being like minded, relationship problems, and guest ions of honor, if any of these subjects interest you. You'll find it all in this book.
Is the best book I have listened to....No, but it was an enjoyable listen. It certainly beats a lot of the %#^* that is currently being passed a a literary best seller.

Was ok

Normally I appreciate a good thriller, but this one was just ok. The story concept was a decent one, but I found the writing to be a bit cliche and trite. Our hero never suffers any major set backs, only minor inconveniences. I really had to suspend reality while listening. Seeing as how this is the first book in the series, I'll likely try another one and see if things get better as the author gets more comfortable.

Waste of time and money

I guess I have just heard to many better versions of this sort of thing. Tom Clancy wannabe that comes up way short IMHO

Don’t bother

One of the most predictable plots I have ever heard. Presentation is so profoundly bad that I had to rewind the book many times to determine if there was an action scene or something that required more than just monotone. Who is this presenter? He definitely made a lousy plot even worse.

Decent Book

It's a decent book. Not a great book, but decent. Overly cliched, a little super-duper, but it was fun like a middling action movie.

Garbage in the genre

No good. Narrative is super derivative. Performance off by a mile. Wrong on so many levels. Skip it.

A great start

A new author who will grow "Logan" into a character to follow. Worth the read.
