Publisher's summary

Alice Rogers, an elderly widow, is dead, found murdered in the Arizona desert. It's easy enough to pin the killing on the teens caught driving her car across the Mexican border, but Sheriff Brady isn't about to let it go at that. Alice was something of a free spirit, with a penchant for Scotch, the glitter of Las Vegas, and a romance with a man 20 years her junior. Her hot-tempered daughter Susan suspects Mom's boyfriend—her former handyman who moved in instead of moving on when he finished his handy work. Now Susan's furious at her brother Clete, the do-nothing mayor of Tombstone, blaming him for not protecting their inheritance by breaking up their mother's winter romance.

Yet all is not as it appears to be, and Joanna is forced to put her personal life on hold to dig deeper into Alice's death, the lives of her greedy offspring, and the identity of her mysterious gentleman friend. And as the investigation gets sidetracked by ugly local land disputes, it takes some troublesome twists and turns, until Sheriff Brady finds herself wading through a murky morass of graft and corruption that may have given someone reason to kill—and kill again.

Critic reviews

"Not just for series fans, this installment features endearing characters and situations ranging from an environmentalist with a car trunk full of rattlesnakes to the local minister who feels she's lost her edge in the pulpit. Highly recommended." ( Library Journal)

Poor narration

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

i really enjoy J. A. Jance's series, the Ali Reynolds series was my favorite, but I've finished it and haven't been disappointed by the Joanna Brady series.

Did Outlaw Mountain inspire you to do anything?

I really want to get the next book in this series, but I will need to take a break. I just don't care for the narrator that has been used for the last few books I've listened to. It is an older woman, C.J. Critt, and Joanna Brady just isn't that old. And although she tries to use different voices, it just doesn't work. She narrates the next book, Devil's Claw, but then I see a different narrator for the books after that. Karen Ziemba, the narrator for almost all of the Ali Reynolds series is excellent!!!

Continued Excellence

As part of the J A Jance series we not only enjoyed the plot development, but were able to fill in some pieces to help us understand the background for subsequent books. We have thoroughly enjoyed about fifteen of her books including this one.

Story very good - narration challenging

This is my first Jance book and I enjoyed it very much. I found the narration distracting as the flow was very uneven and even odd in some places.

Amazing story line

I love this author. My dad told me about J A Jance and I love Joanna Brady. I can relate to many aspects of her life.

A good read

I liked the storyline and how all scenes came together. Butch was too pushy and could have put the Sheriff in danger. Hope he is better in next book. Love Jenny's innocence and acceptance.

Learn to pronounce the words

I love JA Jance and the Brady series is my favorite but there is nothing worse than a reader who can’t pronounce regional words correctly. Huachuca is not wahaka. Ugh

Fun and Interesting

I love Janc e and the way she builds her stories and characters. Her fun books entertain and helped me to focus on something besides the pandemic.

Poor Narration

A great story with several plot lines and more opportunities to get to know Joanna’s fiancée, Butch Dixon. I read this series when they first came out and thought I would enjoy listening to them now, many years later. It’s hard to enjoy this good story with a narrator whose voice is much too old and scratchy to be Joanna. There’s little difference between dialogue and narration, and all the voices sound much the same. There are long pauses in some places, and virtually none between chapters. The narrator speaks so slowly, I listened to the entire book at 1.25 X the normal speed!
