Publisher's summary

Women are being murdered in upstate New York, their bodies found mysteriously hanging in chains. With the FBI called in, given the bizarre nature of the murders - and the lack of any clues - there is only one agent they can turn to: Special Agent Riley Paige.

Riley, reeling from her last case, is reluctant to take on a new one, since she is still convinced a former serial killer is out there, stalking her. She knows, though, that her ability to enter a serial killer's mind and her obsessive nature is what will be needed to crack this case, and she just can't refuse - even if it will push her over the edge.

Riley's search takes her deep into a killer's deluded mind as it leads her to orphanages, mental hospitals, and prisons, all in an effort to understand the depth of his psychosis. Realizing she is up against a true psychopath, she knows time is short before he strikes again. But with her own job on the line and her own family a target, and with her fragile psyche collapsing, it may all be too much for her - and too late.

What possessed Audible to choose a cast of reader with British accents portraying FBI agents?

The story isn’t bad but the dialogue is dreadful. Skip this selection. Listen to music instead.

Wrong Narrator for Story

The story was very good. The narrator would have been wonderful but not on this book. Her accent just didn't work for me and I found myself paying more attention to it than the story.

Took a while to realize this wasn't set in London!

Story moves along pretty well. Fairly straightforward with no real twists or turns. Main thing that got me though is the narrator. Elaine Wise is really good. Love her passion and the way she handles the tension in the book. But really bad choice asking a person with a strong British accent to try narrate a US character. Really put me off. I remember wondering right at the beginning what the FBI is doing in the UK!

Struggled With Narrator's English Accent

The characters were defined enough that I wanted to find out what happened to them.
However I really had problems with the narrators English accent for characters who were supposed to be American. Not just the accent but pronunciations and embellishment of characters made the narration really weird.
The main characters motivations and relationships were improbable.. I listened to the end but I was glad when it was over...

Intriguing plot

I like the plot and the characters. I’m not a fan of the British narrator. I keep forgetting that the protagonist is an American FBI agent and the story takes place in America.

British accent?

Loved the book. however the setting is in Virgina and the narrator has a British accent. It is a liitle difficult to imagine these Virginians speaking with this accent.

Like the story but Not narrator

I like the story. And I think the narrator is good BUT this book really falls short by having a narrator with a heavy English accent. The book is set in the US. I really don’t get why this narrator was used. It really takes away from the story.

Really Enjoyable

Great book, two plots and I will definitely read more books by this author. The narrator did an excellent job, however her English accent portraying American people was a bit hard to get my head around as I kept thinking the storyline was based somewhere in the UK.

Small whinge, and the only one. I still gave the book *****
