Publisher's summary

At the age of 10, Liza Barton shot her mother in their New Jersey home while trying to protect her from her violent stepfather. Despite her stepfather's claim that the shooting was a deliberate act, the Juvenile Court ruled the death an accident.

Trying to erase every trace of Liza's past, her adoptive parents changed Liza's name to Celia. At the age of 28, she married a 60 year-old widower, and they had a son. Before their marriage, Celia confided the secret of her earlier life. On his deathbed, her husband made her swear never to reveal her past to anyone, so that their son would not carry the burden of this family tragedy.

Happily remarried, Celia is shocked when her second husband presents her with a gift-the New Jersey house where she killed her mother. On the day they move in, the words "Beware - Little Lizzie's Place" have been painted on the lawn.

Determined to prove that she was the victim of her stepfather's psychotic behavior, Celia sets out to gather the evidence. When the real estate agent who sold the house is brutally murdered she is once again branded a killer. As Celia fights to prove her innocence, she is not aware that her life and the life of her son are in jeopardy.

no place like home

This book had me suck in from page one.The story line keep twisting and turning so much so that I didn't even suspect the villain to the very end. It is one of the best books I have ever read and highly recommend.

Sad

I like this author and it's taken me a while to figure out why I didn't like this book. It's the narrator. Somehow, she made the story seem so sad and depressing and that feeling was overshadowing . I also found myself annoyed instead of sympathetic to the main character. Her unwillingness to tell her husband, and reluctance in getting a lawyer was frustrating. I wasn't able to develop enough empathy with her to make up for her lack of common sense.

Mixed Emotions

I enjoyed the plot twist and characters, but I felt like there was too much narration and not enough action and dialogue.

The reader did a great job changing her voice to fit each character, but her reading pace was too fast for this book in my opinion.

GREAT SURPRISE

Loved this book.It started out slow but it sure picked up. The ending blew me away.I sure was blindsided. I often can figure out the end of Mis Clarks books but this one was a real surprise.

Very good book

I was captivated to the end and will listen to it again. I use to read Mary Higgins Clark years ago. She is a great author. Jan Maxwell is one of my favorite narrators.

Not good

I’m sorry but this was the most elementary and predictable book ever. It felt like Shirley Temple was reading to me. There was 1 small twist and the end but besides that it was just bad.
