Publisher's Summary

Toby Peters guards a horror icon against a gang of crazed vampire enthusiasts.
Coffins fill the basement of a crumbling Los Angeles movie theater. Five vampires crowd around fading horror idol Bela Lugosi, peppering him with questions. A malfunctioning plastic fang causes one of the undead-wannabes to lisp. The effect is less than fearsome, but Lugosi is terrified, for one of these oddballs has been making threats on his life. He hires Toby Peters to provide security against his unbalanced fans. The detective is not concerned, but he should be. Even fake vampires can kill.
Meanwhile, the Warner brothers contact Peters regarding a murder. A body has surfaced in one of Hollywood’s darker corners, and police suspicion has fallen on one of the studio’s star screenwriters: William Faulkner. As he struggles to balance the murder investigation while protecting Lugosi, Peters finds a thread connecting the two cases. To get Faulkner off the hook, he’ll have to find out who wants to kill Hollywood’s original Dracula.

L.A. Detective Toby Peters is on the Case!

Would you listen to Never Cross a Vampire again? Why?

I will listen to this audio book again. I love these novels. They are so full of humor and heart and fun. They fill me with such nostalgia for this time period I did not inhabit.

What did you like best about this story?

Toby is such a great character. The never takes himself too seriously. He has such humanity. I also love his crazy group of friends.

What does Jim Meskimen bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

I love to be read to. Jim Meskimen does a fine job with this novel. As a southerner, I was also charmed by his Faulkner accent, which he nails.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

No, this novel doesn't "move". It does entertain and amuse. It also immerses. When I am listening to these books I completely "buy it". Stuart Kaminsky was so gifted.

Any additional comments?

This is a great novel. I highly recommend it. P.S. If Audible is "listening" PLEASE get the Recorded Books version of these novels, read by the excellent George Guidall. Nobody reads them better. Masterful!
