Widowed van driver Bob Naylor is prodded into joining the Chichester Writers' Circle by his teenage daughter. Bob writes limericks and jingles, and fears he will be out of his class amongst the literati. But the members of the circle come from all walks of life and practice many forms of writing, from fantasy to household hints. There seems to be nothing about any of them to incite a serial killer. However, there is an arsonist in their midst, burning his victims to death, and Bob becomes a suspect.

Story
Detective Constable Janet Scott is subtle and reliable, a diplomatic thinker with a wry sense of humor. She's put in the time and seen it all, but has no desire for the boss's job—she loves her own too much. Rachel Bailey couldn't be more different—she's energetic, impulsive, and ambitious, and has just been transferred to the Manchester murder squad. Their commander thinks Rachel's intuition could make her a great cop, but has reservations about her shoot-first-think-later approach, so she partners her with Janet.

Great read... or listen!
I was hesitant to purchase this and start another series, but I'm glad I did. The author left a great hook at the end that encourages me to read the next installment.

A good police procedural
The only complaint I had was that there were too many characters to keep up with. I wished the narrator would have done more pauses when the story jumped to another character.

Well written
I enjoyed this book. I was pulled into the lives of the characters and I’m interested to see what happens as I read the next in the series. The only critique I would have is that I sometimes had to go back and relisten because there was not enough pause in between scene changes. That’s one of the tricky parts about listening to a book versus reading it.

Smart Lady Copper fighting the System
I'm a big fan of English mysteries. This is the first DI Hillary Greene book that I have listened to. Although I didn't LOVE it, I really liked it. Accused of being involved with the scam her husband was pulling, DI Greene had an uphill battle, after his death, to prove that she's an honest cop. This book is not quite as rich with atmospheric details as many of the English series I've listened to. I would definitely listen to another in this series.

like the female investigator role but got muddled down with long details FREQUENTLY injected into the plot. just weighed me down…lose interest. Hope next Hillary adventure brings me back.
