Publisher's summary

Mack's Bar is one of those nice, friendly places where everybody knows your name. That's great when someone's buying you a round, but not so hot when you find yourself atop a list of murder suspects - with your fingerprints on the bloody knife!

Mackenzie "Mack" Dalton is a Milwaukee bar owner with a nose for trouble - literally. A neurological glitch has left her with extra-perceptive senses. So when she stumbles upon a dead body in the alley behind the bar - the same spot where her own father was shot eight months earlier - she can tell right away there's something fishy in the air.

The lead detective thinks there's a link between the two deaths, and he'll need Mack's help to sniff out the murderer amid the crowd of eccentric regulars. But when all the evidence points to her as the most likely culprit, it could be an early last call for Mack - and celebratory cocktails for a killer.

Fun!

Interesting insight into a little known condition, and an engaging story read by one of my favorite narrators. I often choose new authors to try, and even genres, based upon a terrific narrator!

Too Long

I started out liking this book but 4 hours into it I was done. The story could have wrapped up by then but it went on and on.

Good & bad

First this could/should be a good 3 hours shorter. If all the unnecessary details, like how many times “the story we decided to tell so & so customers”, about Duncan, all the various feels, smells, tastes, etc ad nauseam, all the descriptions of food & drink orders,it would have been a better listen. Then the way the “investigation” was conducted, never ever would have happened. Lastly the adolescent actions between Mac & Zack & Mac & Duncan were pretty bad. Had a lot of promise with the unique situation of Mac’s but fell short. A plus was female narrator’s ability to do voices. Mystery was a 3 at best.

The gender dynamics

Uh. Girl falls in love with possessive asshole cop bc he makes her taste chocolate. She Fires good guy who may have had criminal record but he still saves her in the end. Gross. She behaves consistently like she’s dumb as a box of rocks but somehow stumbles into the answer.

unbelievable

Single female bar owner
experiences:
strange sounds at night,
mutiple thefts from a locked safe but,
no police are called.
multiple incidences of sabotage,
no police are called,
no surveillance is installed,
no locks are changed.
all this occurs after her father is murdered in an alley behind the bar inaccessible from the outside...
unbelievable

Oof this one is rough.

I couldn’t get over the constant mention of Mack’s synesthetic experiences. Like girl we get it. Don’t need to mention it over and over. The story wasn’t good enough to distract me from that.

local Story

this book was a fun story to listen to since I live in Milwaukee the author set the mystery in Milwaukee Wisconsin so any of the local references I would be able to recognize storyline with somewhat predictable but it was still a fun book to listen to and I loved Duncan's accent.
