Publisher's summary

The stunning new novel from Clare Mackintosh, the international best-selling author of I Let You Go and I See You.

The police say it was suicide.

Anna says it was murder.

They're both wrong.

Last year, Tom and Caroline Johnson chose to end their lives, one seemingly unable to live without the other. Their daughter, Anna, is struggling to come to terms with her parents' deaths, unwilling to accept the verdict of suicide.

Now with a baby herself, Anna feels her mother's absence keenly and is determined to find out what really happened to her parents. But as she digs up the past, someone is trying to stop her.

Sometimes it's safer to let things lie....

Wonderful...

So so good. So much enjoyment in these hours. I disappeared until I finished. I wish all of the books I choose were this good. 1in a 1000.

Didn’t see that coming.

Love the twists and turns to the end! Worth the credit. Looking forward to more from Clare.

good plot but with an unlikeable main character

i liked the story and plot twists but the narrator was annoying. her accent was so strange and affected. if i had to hear her say "my pay-rents" one more time i was going to scream. also there was a lot of repetition. the book should have been edited down quite a bit with the same things said over and over. lastly the main character is a bland unlikable wet noodle.

The narrator reading ruined this book for me..

The narrator reading this book ruined it for me. She sounds so robotic and is so boring that I found myself zoning out continuously. So unfortunately I returned the book after about 1/4 of the way through... I had little to no idea what was going on. However from what little I remember the story sounded very interesting! So I will buy this one in paper back and read it when I have time.

Just ok...

Interesting premise, but it jumps around a lot and seems very disconnected at times. Also some parts of the book seem so unrelated. Honestly, this one was only ok.

A tad disappointing

I eagerly anticipated this one. The premise is good, but even as I told myself, "Remember...this is is fiction", I did an eye roll on multiple occasions. I had the main twist figured out, and the final twist was rather anticlimactic. The idea, for example, of Anna sprinting around clutching an infant like a football, was a bit much. Caroline in general was not a believable character. Good narration...just a bit far-fetched for me.

Gripping

Overall the audiobook was quite enjoyable, though some parts seemed farfetched and perhaps a bit too bleak.

This was a terrible book

Maybe I need to move out of thrillers, because lately they all seem to paint with the same brush.

The story was sub-par and confusing in parts. The main character had no real traits outside of “mother,” the boyfriend was creepy, and the plot was terrible.

Sorry, Clare Mackintosh. I probably won’t be reading any more of your books.

Good bones aren't enough

Story is well-plotted, and nice enough in writing style. Nothing annoyed me excessively until about half way through and the plotting began to show through as a machine part instead of structure for an organic story. I didn't believe it. First of all, children of alcoholics usually know there's a problem, but even if they manage to deceive themselves until safely delivered into adulthood, nobody is so dense as to make the mistake the narrator makes here.

By the story's end, the mistakes pile up into a fantasy. The plot's ok on paper, but it fails the crucial test: who'd buy it? On the other hand, I listened to the whole thing and gave it three stars. Not terrible, and the narrator is great.
