Publisher's summary

Hanna Schutt never suspected that her younger daughter's happiness would lead to her husband's death and the destruction of their family. When Dawn brings her new boyfriend home from college for a visit, her parents and sister try to hide their doubts because they're glad that Dawn--always an awkward child--appears to have grown into a confident, mature young woman in her relationship with Rud. But when Hanna and her husband, Joe, are beaten savagely in their bed, Rud becomes the chief suspect and stands trial for Joe's murder.

Claiming her boyfriend's innocence, Dawn estranges herself from her mother, who survived the attack with serious injuries and impaired memory. When Rud wins an appeal, and Dawn returns to the family home saying she wants to support her mother, Hanna decides to try to remember details of that traumatic night so she can testify to keep her husband's murderer in jail, never guessing that the process might cause her to question everything she thought she knew about her daughter.

No mystery here

The plot summary sounded interesting. A woman trying to find out if her daughter had anything to do with the brutal croquette mallet attack that left her husband dead and her with permanent injuries.

Only the answer to that question is pretty clear from the beginning. The audience is meant to be a few steps ahead of the protagonist but COME ON. This book is much less of a mystery or a thriller than an examination of the most annoying, self deluded characters on earth. By the end you'll probably feel like hitting all of them, especially the narrator, with a croquette mallet.

Very predictable

The author did a great job writing from the view of a mother, her fears, thoughts, and love of her children. However, I knew what happened within a few chapters and was not at all surprised. It drew out the story and was extremely boring in parts. If I hadn't gotten this for free with my credit then I would be upset I had to pay. I don't recommend this book.

Gives You Lots to Think About

This book was so much better than I anticipated! I like books that delve into the psyche and explore different relationships. This book goes really deep into the relationship of mothers and their children. The title and the use of the phrase is also very clever.

I'm looking forward to seeing more from this author. She has lots of talent!

Lacy Eye

The dog dies at the end. Why must the dog always die?!?!?! Let’s put a stop to that nonsense.

Gripping !

I loved this book. A fascinating story of a mother in severe denial who gradually comes to terms with her daughter’s pathology.

So good

I’m not sure if this is considered a thriller, but I was on the edge of my seat all the way up to the last page.

Could Not Stop Listening

It is going to be a long day at work today since I was up most of the night listening to this book! This is such a realistic story that it is chilling, especially if you are a parent.

Intriguing but sad

It kept me intrigued enough to listen. Enjoyed the narrator bringing the characters to life.
