Publisher's Summary

Detective Inspector Denis Hamilton is tasked with apprehending a brutal murderer stalking the streets of London - and leaving not a shred of DNA evidence. As the suspect list mounts, his frustration and pressure from his superiors intensify.
Grace Murphy, who is dealing with the recent loss of her beloved grandfather, falls deeper into despair when her friends' bodies are discovered. Fearing she may be the killer's next target, she begins to question if her horrifying nightmares are the key to unravelling the murderer's identity.
How far would you go to uncover the truth? Would you venture into the shadows to unmask a killer?

3.5 stars for the surprise ending..

One reviewer said “made no sense” and I have to agree. As of page 125 I couldn’t figure out why Grace was even part of this book. Her grief was ridiculous, her grandfather had been sick long enough for her to say goodbye, and she was nothing but a drunk, she guzzled wine like it was simply glasses of water and raised hell with her mother at every turn. Then the wine wasn’t enough so she started guzzling vodka right out of the bottle.

Grace WAS the main female character in this story but I couldn’t stand her. We’ll just call her the lush of the story for lack of anything else. I like a main male and female in a story but not this kind of female. By 65% I found myself skimming just to get away from her.

Ok, I reached the end and I can honestly say "I did not see that coming!" I’ve read other books like that but they were never drunks. It made Grace very unlikable, and hard to feel sorry for her. I have a question that’s really driving me crazy but to ask it would give away the whole story, and there’s no figuring it out on my own. Bummer.

As to the narrator: Craig Beck was good. He did the female voice barely ok but all the males had their own voices so you knew who was talking. I would definitely listen to him again.

Gripping page turner

This is an amazing book... I wanted to listen over a weeks vacation but I got so hooked that I listened to it all in one day. Well written and very well read by the narrator.

Great story - excellent voiced by Craig Beck

What did you like best about this story?

I love Craig Beck’s voice and how he differs his intonation, his speed and language while speaking for the different protagonists. His voicing of the murderer is chilling and gives me the creeps like when yet another victim is killed and he says “that shut her up” (time:00:01:16; chapter 26, 00:02:54 -55). His performance of detective Hamilton is so good, that when you hear the voice, you see an image of the detective. In all, Craig Beck’s performance, giving each of the different characters a fitting and recognisable voice, adds to the pleasure of listening to this audiobook. Like I read the book in once session, I almost did the same with the audiobook. It’s my first ever audiobook to listen to as well as to review and the experience is great. The narration follows the book excellently and is perfectly interchangeable with the book.

Debut novel - good story well tied up

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

Given that this book was part of a challenge on TBC this has already been recommended by a few people on the site and yes I would recommend it to a friend.

What other book might you compare In the Shadows to, and why?

In the Shadows has no real direct comparison, however, it has some common denominators with a lot of the genre and is enjoyable.

Would you listen to another book narrated by Craig Beck?

The narration was not particularly notable, however there was nothing particularly objectionable, either. If he were to narrate another book it wouldn't put me off reading it.

If this book were a film would you go see it?

This book and its style is well suited to TV and film as it is shorter than average and jumps quickly between action scenes and so would make good tv.

Any additional comments?

As this is the first book by this author I've been told by a friend that her next book is also worth reading.
