Publisher's summary

With Nero Wolfe on the job, you'd think murderers would take caution. But even the master detective can't stop a killing, especially if it's an inside job - right under the roof of his client, millionaire Otis Jarrell. What's more, it's Jarrell's own missing revolver that the killer uses. Wolfe must find the truth behind the scandals in Jarrell's ill-behaved family. One of its members sleeps the fitful sleep of the guilty, and Wolfe's getting dead tired of murder.

Critic reviews

"It's always a treat to read a Nero Wolfe mystery. The man has entered our folklore." (The New York Times)
"What's not to like about a Nero Wolfe mystery? The mysteries are short, cleverly plotted, well paced, and, if you're an audiobook listener, wonderfully read by Michael Prichard....Prichard has read nearly 20 books in Stout's series and has mastered Wolfe's deep, meditative voice and Archie's spry, chipper voice, as well as those of a host of other characters we recognize from one recording to the next." Very good but not outstanding Rex Stout

Always fun to witness interplay between Wolfe and Archie. The solution was not that surprising.

Who' the snake?

The cast is quite large, the unusual thing is what Archy does. As usual, the story and the reader are exceptional. The answer to "who is the killer" entices to the very end!

Fun Story

Would you listen to If Death Ever Slept again? Why?

Yes, I enjoyed both the reader's voice and the story.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Archie is always my favorite. He is fun-loving, never serious, and yet, he always gets the job done.

Have you listened to any of Michael Prichard’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I have only listened to Michael Prichard read the Rex Stout books. He has a good voice for the story. It isn't too theatrical. He reads clearly and alters his voice enough to hear the differences in characters as well as their personalities.

Quick easy listen .

I like this author and antique characters. I especially liked the person reading. You may have fun with all you can learn about orchids and gastronomy. I also like Mr. Stouts referenced to what Wolf is read in the story line of these books.

If Death Ever Slept

Standard Nero Wolfe and Archie Goodwin mystery.
The characters are well developed and the pace is a little slow.

Nero Wolfe at his best

There are no books as good as these in detective fiction. Rex Stout is a great author and if one listens to his books, they will be entertained, even if you don’t figure out who did it.

Slow

I usually don't rate books. I tried with deep hope to like this story, to wait for the plot to thicken with some hook to keep my interest; complete failure. Hours of my life I will never get back!
