Publisher's summary

Detective Alex Cross is being stalked by a psychotic genius, forced to play the deadliest game of his career. Cross' family - his loving wife Bree, the wise and lively Nana Mama, and his precious children - have been ripped away. Terrified and desperate, Cross must give this mad man what he wants if he has any chance of saving the most important people in his life. The stakes have never been higher: What will Cross sacrifice to save the ones he loves?

Widely praised by the greatest crime and thriller writers of our time, Cross My Heart set a jaw-dropping story in motion. Hope to Die propels Alex Cross' greatest challenge to its astonishing finish, proving why Jeffery Deaver says "nobody does it better" than James Patterson.

Critic reviews

"Behind all the noise and the numbers, we shouldn't forget that no one gets this big without amazing natural storytelling talent--which is what James Patterson has, in spades. The Alex Cross series proves it." (Lee Child)
"It's no mystery why James Patterson is the world's most popular thriller writer: his uncanny skill in creating living, breathing characters we truly feel for and seamless, lightning-fast plots. I do this for a living, and he still manages to keep me guessing from the first to last page. Simply put: Nobody does it better." (Jeffery Deaver)
"James Patterson is The Boss. End of." (Ian Rankin)

Don't waste your money/credits!!!

Would you try another book from James Patterson and/or Michael Boatman and Scott Sower ?

Yes, but this one is awful

Would you ever listen to anything by James Patterson again?

Yes

Would you be willing to try another one of Michael Boatman and Scott Sower ’s performances?

Not really

Do you think Hope to Die needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

NO!!! This book is way too long and too much description....Please no follow up book....

Any additional comments?

I have read/listened to all of the Alex Cross series. Don't waste your time with this one, just wait for the movie. This book is written for the screen with all the descriptions....As you listen you just want him to get on with the story!!!!

Kept my head in a vise the entire book.

This book was really great. The suspense kept me trying to figure out what was going to happen. The supporting characters added fabulous support to the story.

Yeah for Nanna Momma!

Buy a vowel!

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

People used to listen to books will probably not like this. There are many names starting with the letter A which ultimately became a distraction - Alex, Acadia, Aaliyah, Ali are just a few - a few too many. Why are so many people in this work "A" names. After several hours of listening you find your self thinking about the prominance of A names in the work more than the story.

Has Hope to Die turned you off from other books in this genre?

I like this genre - just not Hope to Die.

How could the performance have been better?

The performance was driven by the text.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Disappointment and annoyance.

Worst Audible book I've purchased.

What would have made Hope to Die better?

A better, more believable story, better writing and better performance.

Would you ever listen to anything by James Patterson again?

Sorry, James. I guess it's time to give up on Alex Cross.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Michael Boatman and Scott Sower ?

Anyone.

Any additional comments?

The book was poorly written and poorly performed from the outset. It never got traction, ever. I finally quit listening out of disbelief and boredom. I was truly surprised having enjoyed other Alex Cross novels.

Alex takes it personal

I actually enjoyed this book more then the last two. The involvement of multiple villains and multiple assets to assist Alex was interesting. Don't want to be a spoiler, but the climate was unexpected. I was also surprised that Ava was written in as White. I always assumed she was Black given she was from neighborhood and the issue with the White boyfriend. Good listen for the holidays.

Little disappointed

What disappointed you about Hope to Die?

This is probably the last of this series although as a previous review stated it is more of a franchise now than entertainment and so the disappointed reader is probably required to just get over it. After all we have already made the purchase. the money is already spent. I miss the early efforts of a white man who wrote a black man so well. I even understand that ultimately now writers want a book that will become a movie or successful to Audible. I just miss good reading, surprising and unpredictable. I miss when Mr. Patterson wrote for himself and not the formula. Oh well. At least future writers will know how they can make money from their craft and through his name.

Would you ever listen to anything by James Patterson again?

Nope. I think I'm done.
