Publisher's Summary

Jack Fox, not handsome enough for Hollywood but too damned handsome for his own good, lands a plum job when the mysterious, gorgeous, and stratospherically wealthy Eve Hargrove shows up at his office and drops a stack of cash in his lap. All he has to do is drop her troubled sister's case - a down on her luck stripper with legs from here to the next zip code. It would all be so easy - if he didn't have an inconvenient hard-on for the truth - and Eve.
When a golden-haired beauty is found brutally slain, the last thing that 16-year-old Enid Iglowski expected was to become the prime suspect. Running away from her troubled home in Florida and newly arrived in Phoenix in search of her real father, a private detective named Jack Fox, Enid finds herself caught in a web of murder, violence, and underage sex trafficking.
When a corpse is found in the desert, a cold case gets red hot for Detective Bud Orlean, who'll sacrifice everything, including his marriage, to prove that Eve Hargrove is a sociopathic killer. When the bodies start piling up and Enid Iglowski is at the center of every mess, Bud finds himself forced to work with the one man he despises, Jack Fox, to get to the truth.

I had so much fun listening to this audiobook!

Gunning For Angels is a murder mystery featuring Jack, a private investigator, who discovers that one of his numerous one-night stands has produced Enid, a 16-year-old who has run away from home to find her father. Enid is a determined girl with plenty of attitude who is wise beyond her years but also very lost. It was so much fun following the budding relationship between irrepressible Enid and her lothario father who has no idea how to cope with a teenage daughter.

Then there's Bud, a police detective whose health is suffering, who has marital issues and whose son has just dropped out of medical school.

The case being investigated actually became almost a secondary part of the entire story as I was so focused on the characters and their interactions with each other. There was a lot going on with the characters trying to cope with their personal lives while simultaneously being entangled in a murder investigation and then further murders and chaos ensued.

Gunning For Angels is C. Mack Lewis's fiction debut and what a debut it is. She has a wonderful way with words. I loved the quotes at the start of each chapter and how the theme of angels kept turning up in the descriptions and dialog. The writing flowed really well. The entire audiobook was a fast-paced thrill ride with very funny dialog and well drawn characters I fell in love with. As this was Fallen Angels Book 1, I now desperately want book 2. There is no cliffhanger.

I absolutely loved John Bell's narration. If you prefer audiobooks to be read out in a straightforward manner, you won't agree with my 5-star rating. John Bell delivers a dramatic performance and he sounds as if he puts his heart and soul into it. He has a distinct voice for each and every character, and there are quite a few. His voices may be a little on the extreme but because of the wonderfully eccentric cast of characters and the humor involved, this totally worked for me in this case. I didn't find any issues with the production.

A trigger warning: the story involves human trafficking and sexual abuse of minors.

Highly recommended if you enjoy witty detective stories and gritty mysteries!

Exciting Murder Mystery

This was a suspenseful murder mystery with a detective that thought with his little head too much. The narration was good except for the voice of the detectives daughter. It was whiney and annoying. Overall it was a good listen with a lot of action and a few tears.
