Publisher's summary

Los Angeles D.A. Rachel Knight is a tenacious, wise-cracking, and fiercely intelligent prosecutor in the city's most elite division. When her colleague, Jake, is found dead at a grisly crime scene, Rachel is shaken to the core. She must take over his toughest case: the assault of a young woman from a prominent family.

But she can't stop herself from digging deeper into Jake's death, a decision that exposes a world of power and violence and will have her risking her reputation - and her life - to find the truth.

With her tremendous expertise in the nuances of L.A. courts and crime, and with a vibrant ensemble cast of characters, Marcia Clark combines intimate detail, riotous humor, and visceral action in a debut thriller that marks the launch of a major new figure on the crime-writing scene.

EXCELLENT!

I'm usually willing to try out a new author's first offering, and this one is an absolute hit! Grabbed my attention with the first word and held it until the very last word. Ms. Clark has a smart, hip style of writing that is fun to read along with an excellent story line. I hope that she will continue putting out a couple of books a year that are as good as this one.

Enjoyable and entertaining

I bought this because of the author's celebrity, not expecting a whole lot. I was delighted to listen to it. I would have given it a 4 1/2 if possible. I felt that the story was good, dialogue was snappy, and it had some flair. But I had the plot line before the end and it lacked the twist at the end which could have made me rate it a five.

I will buy the next one not for the author's name but for her talent. Nice job!

Pleasant Surprise

Okay, I'll admit it. I bought the book solely because of the author's name, having no idea whether Marcia Clark could write a good book. She could. Good story - several twists - humour - mystery - insight into the legal system. I'd read another.

Guilt By Association

I had read the non-friction of the O.J. Trial by Marcia Clark and enjoyed it so decided to try her fiction story. I enjoyed it and hope it becomes a series. Knight acted more like a cop in the story than a D.A. as the case was no where near ready for trial. Interesting story with lots of inside information and a tour guide of the L.A. area. January LaVoy did a great job in narrating the story.

DA or Cop?

This is a well written and well narrated effort. The story is very plausible and current. However, the words and actions of the protagonist are much more like those I would expect from a cop than from a DA.. What kind of DA, even from the elite section of the DA's office, has the time this one does to do investigations such as are found in this book. And what DA thinks, when completely covered by a blanket, that something pushed against her neck feels like a snub-nose 44 magnum?

Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the book but it would have worked better with the lead as a cop not a DA.

CLARK IS A BETTER WRITER THAN DA, BUT NOT BY MUCH

Marcia Clarke made an astute career move deciding to leave the law to become a crime writer. She's no Michael Connelley and her character DA Rachel McBride couldn't drive Mickey Haller's Lincoln for him. But, overall, it's not a bad effort for folks who believe anything they read and know very little about criminal law. The story reads like what Clark wishes her real job was like before she made the mistake of believing that she could take on OJ's "Dream Team", only to spectacularly lose a case that even Dr. Seuss could have won. If you like "chick-lit-law", then this book is for you. It's a little too fluffy for me. I like my characters better developed and the plots more credible. Clark still has little knowledge or sensitivity for minorities, creating caricatures that border on offensive. Narrator January LaVoy does well with what she's given to work with. Fortunately I got this book on sale for $4.95 so I can't complain too much. I just hope that Clark and Chris Darden don't team up on a crime novel!

Marcia Clark's first novel

Author Marcia Clark remains best known as a Los Angeles prosecutor, but she has not practiced law for 20 tears. She began writing novel with the 2011 release of Guilt by Association. She has now 6 novels and 2 novellas, all legal thrillers, to her credit. This novel is a solid 4 star legal thriller; all of her later novels are even better. Rachael Knight is a great protagonist who Clark continued to develop throughout the series. Her Samantha Brinkman series is even better than Rachael Knight novels.

As a Marcia Clark fan I am disappointed with her selection of narrators for most of her novels. January LaVoy narrates this novel and does an outstanding job.

I like Marcia Clark's novels a lot. She writes consistently excellent to outstanding legal thrillers.

Mixed Reviews

This was a good tale, but was uneven. Clark introduces the various characters well. From the start there is a division between the case assigned that was supposed to be worked and the case she was forbidden to work. It goes back and forth at first. But then it seems Knight spends WAY too much time on the forbidden case and goes WAY out of line that she should have been caught. But at that point, the assigned case takes over. Good story but uneven.

The narration is as well. It bothers me when female narrators cannot do male voices well. It seems there is an overcompensation. Just use your regular voice.

For a debut novel, it was good enough that I will continue to read her other books.

I really wanted to like it

Since this was the first book in a series I really hoped it would be good but I just couldn't stand it. It was tough getting through the whole book. Luckily it isn't a very long story. Rich people are bad and thugs are good. Really? The author went out of her way to make darn sure we know she isn't judgmental but at the risk of over doing the characters. I also don't like when female narrators do a low man's voice. The accents were ridiculous too. Ugh, glad it's over. Needless to say I won't be listening to the others in the series.
