Publisher's summary

The fourth thriller in the number one best-selling crime series from the award-winning Stuart MacBride. Panic grips the Granite City as DS Logan McRae heads up a manhunt for 'The Flesher' - one of the UK's most notorious serial killers.

The case was closed. Until the killer walked free....

When an offshore container turns up at Aberdeen Harbour full of human meat, it kicks off the largest manhunt in the Granite City's history.

Twenty years ago 'The Flesher' was butchering people all over the UK - turning victims into oven-ready joints - until Grampian's finest put him away. But 11 years later he was out on appeal. Now he's missing, and people are dying again.

When members of the original investigation start to disappear, Detective Sergeant Logan McRae realises the case might not be as clear cut as everyone thinks....

Twenty years of secrets and lies are being dragged into the light. And the only thing that's certain is that Aberdeen will never be the same again.

To Gruesom For Me

You’re about to enter a world of cannibalism, seasoned with a dash of pedophilia. Almost too much for me but that may be a cultural sensitivity. After all, the Scots eat haggis so it would take something of much greater magnitude to raise an eyebrow. And, this takes cannibalism up a gear.
Compared to the previous books in the series, this one picks up the pace a little and focuses more on the main plot than the side issues. It still suffers from undeveloped characters defined only by a few of their quirks, ad nauseam. And, the principal antagonist doesn’t come on stage until late in the book, adding a touch of a pulling-the-rabbit-out-of-the-hat conclusion.

But, the decent pace of the action makes this a more readable book than previous offerings. If, you can tolerate the gore.

If you like violence

I really enjoyed the unfolding of the mystery but I did not like the last few chapters. Gross is gross, though I can't think of an ending with swift finesse. The characters are good, the funny quips fly, the tensions are non stop and I still enjoy this series a lot!

Great writing, but the story is too gory for me

Stuart MacBride is a very skilled and engaging author who makes readers genuinely care about his characters. I really like how he plays with stereotypes and cliches by turning them around in unexpected ways. Unfortunately, this story line was just too gory for me. :(

A bit (!) gory but excellent

Despite the difficulty listening to this because it was so gory, this was a great book. Edge of the chair good. But I couldn't listen in bed. It wasn't what I wanted to think about as I fell asleep.

I love the characters. I love the narration. And I love MacBride's writing. The ending of this was amazing!

Gruesome

I first read this years ago and now that I’m revisiting my MacBride collection I’m surprised at how grisly it is, in a way that I would never tolerate from another writer. Maybe it’s Steve Worsley’s great and somehow upbeat performance, or the fact that I love the cast of characters that keeps me from turning off. MacBride, it seems, can put his characters through quite a horror show and still keep me rolling along with him. Bring a dark sense of humor and a strong stomach for this one.

Extremely gory but still good

Extremely gory but an amazing plot and character development. I would recommend to only those who have strong stomachs

Chillingly Enthralling

Fascinating book. It’s gross in places but it’s realistic. I couldn’t stop and was sorry to finish. It’s the BEST in this series.
