I enjoyed this little mystery, that unfolds in Wales, with the good-hearted Constable Evan Evans at work doing what he does best--using his knowledge of local people and his keen intuitions to solve the murder the higher-ups cannot. It's also fun to get a sense of the local Welsh names and customs.
This short series precedes the "Royal Spyness" stories, where I think Rhys Bowen has created a more engaging set of characters. But they are a pleasant listen in their way. I thought this one was a little flat (perhaps due to the narration as much as the story), and it was a bit choppy in getting all the characters and clues in place. But it has mostly well-drawn characters, and the ending was not obvious throughout the story. It is interesting to put these two series side by side to see Bowen's development as an author, and a good read, if you are not seeking anything too flashy.
This is a good cozy mystery--certainly worth a listen. But the quality of the recording is not as good as one might wish, and that detracts from what is less than stellar narration. I guess what this book was missing was anything that made it "pop" (as they say about colors and styles). Get it, enjoy it, just know it's more like a cup of herbal tea than an exciting cocktail.
One good thing about this series--they can be read out of order (which I did, years ago) with no real loss of continuity.

Perfect for not-scary, fun (if not complex) characters with Welsh accents. Not as much laughing as Her Royal Spyness, yet smiles of amusement frequently.
Why are next books in series not available?
It's a a bit like your pub refusing to refill your glass...
