Publisher's summary

A brand-new anthology of stories inspired by the Arthur Conan Doyle canon.

In this follow-up to the acclaimed In the Company of Sherlock Holmes, expert Sherlockians Laurie King and Leslie Klinger put forth the question: What happens when great writers/creators who are not known as Sherlock Holmes devotees admit to being inspired by Conan Doyle stories? While some are highly regarded mystery writers, others are best known for their work in the fields of fantasy or science fiction. All of these talented authors, however, share a great admiration for Arthur Conan Doyle and his greatest creations, Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson.

To the editors' great delight, these stories go in many directions. Some explore the spirit of Holmes himself; others tell of detectives inspired by Holmes' adventures or methods. A young boy becomes a detective; a young woman sharpens her investigative skills; an aging actress and a housemaid each find that they have unexpected talents. Other characters from the Holmes stories are explored, and even non-Holmesian tales by Conan Doyle are echoed. The variations are endless!

Although not a formal collection of new Sherlock Holmes stories, some entries do fit that mold, while others were inspired by the Conan Doyle canon. The results are breathtaking, for fans of Holmes and Watson as well as listeners new to Doyle's writing.

Full cast of narrators includes Marguerite Gavin, Mirron Willis, Ralph Lister, Saskia Maarleveld, Sarah Nichols, Tim Gerard Reynolds, and Traber Burns.

Easy listen

It is so very hard to find modern fiction that is entertaining without engendering severe tension. I have listened multiple times to this collection and will continue to do so. The Reader's are great save one. In my current menopausal state I need a soothing goto book to allow myself to drift pleasantly back to sleep.

Wonderful collection!

This group of Holmes-inspired stories was a delightful listen! I was impressed by how well the narrators captured the tone of the stories they were emulating. Highly recommend!

Some hits , some misses....

For my preferences , drifts too far from the Canon. Well written and read just not enough Holmes and Watson.

A Great Collection

This is an eclectic collection of stories related to the Sherlock Holmes series. Some are better than others, but on the whole they are an enjoyable experience.

"Inspired" Sherlock Holmes + Chapter Titles

The "inspired" stories are a mixed bag, with some hits and some misses. I found the stories that actually had Sherlock Holmes as a character more interesting than the ones that did not.

The book cover references a PDF story but “Mrs. Hudson Investigates” by Tony Lee and Bevis Mussan is missing. Also, I wish Audible had some way of fixing books with missing chapter titles.

Chapter 1: Introduction

Chapter 2: “Holmes on the Range” by John Connolly

Chapter 3: “Irregular” by Meg Gardiner

Chapter 4: “Where There Is Honey, Part 1” by Dana Cameron

Chapter 5: “Where There Is Honey, Part 2” by Dana Cameron

Chapter 6: “Before a Bohemian Scandal” by Tasha Alexander

Chapter 7: “The Spiritualist” by David Morrell

Chapter 8: “The Adventure of the Dancing Women” by Hank Phillippi Ryan

Chapter 9: “Raffa” by Anne Perry

Chapter 10: “The Crown Jewel Affair” by Michael Scott

Chapter 11: “Understudy in Scarlet” by Hallie Ephron

Chapter 12: “Martin X” by Gary Phillips

Chapter 13: “The Painted Smile” by William Kent Krueger

Chapter 14: “The First Mrs. Coulter” by Catriona McPherson

Chapter 15: “The Case of the Speckled Trout” by Deborah Crombie

Chapter 16: “The Adventure of the Empty Grave” by Jonathan Maberry

Chapter 17: “Limited Resources” by Denise Mina

Chapter 18: “The Adventure of the Extraordinary Rendition” by Cory Doctorow

Never reeled me in

It's a little hard to give this a single score because the stories, and the readers, vary in quality enormously. But none are great and some are pretty poor. (Full disclosure: I gave up half-way through; maybe it gets better.) Several of the stories had a clever premise, but somehow the execution was poor and they all promised more than they delivered. When listening just became a burden, I stopped.

Mixture of good and not so good

Most of the stories are written in spirit of Sherlock.
But this collection is a long way from the best.
Ok for light listening.

Every other chapter for women

EVERY OTHER CHAPTER OK FOR THE MOST PART, BUT NOT IN THE DOYLE CANON. SOME MAY LIKE THE BOOK, BUT IT,S NOT FOR ME.

Quite Entertaining If You're Okay With INSPIRED

There's a nice variety of what the authors created, including fictional characters gaining agency in the real world, modern characters with names invoking Holmes, Watson, etc., staging of a play based on a Holmes adventure, a young boy insisting to his therapist that he's Holmes, stories that slip right into canon, etc. Like any anthology, some are stronger than others.

My favorites were by William Kent Krueger, best known for his Cork O'Connor series, and Anne Perry, known for her William Monk series and Charlotte and Thomas Pitt. Both evoked an emotional connection within its short length, which impressed me.

Also, the readers are solid, including a couple of my favorites, Kate Reading and Marguerite Gavin.

My only disappointment was I was expecting there to be a story from the editor, Laurie R King, whose known for her Mary Russel and Sherlock Holmes.

good stories, some audio issues

I enjoyed all the stories, but several had repeated lines and other audio editing issues which would have been found if the producer had listened to the final product before putting it up for sale. the stories were very enjoyable though despite the issues.
