PTSD for the rest of us

Something about Rick Gregory's voice takes me to another place. I hear him and also hear his characters. His narrator voice and character voice is unique and I love all of it. This story focuses mainly on five friends, namely one with PTSD, a wife who lost her husband but who isn't quite gone, one who found faith but lost it, and one who is lost and may be something else, I really was brought into the life of these soldiers. All of them have an integral part of the story.

The story is a hodgepodge of past and present, over viewing the lives of a few friends. Other than explaining the haunting I assume one has after going to war there isn't much "scare" until the end. This book, is in my mind, is where the character development starts and the following books are where the rest of the story takes off. Great start and lead off; but;, once you get there it ends abruptly. Now to wait for the next chapter. Looking forward to it. This book is leading to something great. Maybe lycans, maybe insectman, mabye even a ghost in the basement. All roads are possible.

Listen to this first story and stick with it. I hope the next includes the same narrator, Rick does a great job.

Slow.

The basic idea of the story is about a group of friends that grow up together. All the guys go off to war and, of those that come back, they come back changed. Maggie, another of the group, is married to one of the friends, but he dies in the war. She is now a widow and is drawn to a weird old house she barely remembers seeing as a child. She wants all her childhood friends to reunite and so sends out an invitation. Thee house isn't as it seems though!!

This was a hard book to rate simply because, while I really enjoyed it, I just found it a little disjointed and a lot slow!! Parts of the book were gripping, when suddenly the story seemed to change character with no warning. I felt like as soon as I was starting to get to know a character, it would shift to another one, and another and then come back to the first. It was all over the place.

There is a lot if characters in this, and we get to know their backstory a bit, which I liked a lot. For me anyway, it's the characters that made the book readable. They all go to war and all come back irrevocably changed. They were all well written, but I did want a little more development with them.

This is the first in the series and as such, does have a lot of world building to do, so I can understand why the action took a while to take off. I do think I'll read the next just to see what happens!! In all, it's a good enough read!

Rick Gregory did a good job with this. He is clear and easy to follow, and his cadences and inflections were fine. I do think he needs to work on his character voices and distinguishing them a little more. Sometimes his tone stayed the same no matter which character was talking.

Narrator is awful

The narrator is nearly monotone, cannot pronounce some words, pauses after reading 3-4 words inside a sentence, does not do characters well and has some weird echo thing he tries to do to indicate speaking over a distance. For me, this book is absolutely ruined by the horrible narration. This book is supposed to be creepy and mysterious but the narrator tells the story like he is explaining physics to someone.

Not His Best

I have absolutely loved every story I've read by Thomas S. Flowers until this one. I couldn't get into it and I also found it confusing (which probably didn't help me get into it). Since I've so enjoyed the works of Flowers I stuck it out until the end and it never felt explained/resolved to me. The horror aspect wasn't as prominent as I had expected/desired and it jumped back and forth between plot lines which was as distracting as it was annoying. All of that said, I like that narration of Rick Gregory, who has narrated many books I have enjoyed. He is good every time!

Confusing

Some reviewers complained about the narrator. I thought he did just fine, and I listen to a LOT of books. They do offer an audio sample to see if the narrator's voice is to your liking, so why not listen first?

The story itself left me confused. The author jumps from character to character in such a way that I found myself back-tracking to make sure I understood what was going on. I know this is supposed to be book one of a series, but none of the characters have even the slightest hint of even the beginnings of a resolution to their plight. The book ending was, to me, akin to breaking away mid-sentence...frustrating. To me, the characters are barely sketched out. I am not interested enough to buy book two. Sorry, but this book was provided for free in exchange for an honest review, and this is my honest review.,

Bad narration. Slow story.

I received this audiobook for free from the author / narrator / publisher in exchange for an unbiased review.

The biggest problem with this audiobook first - the narration. It was pretty bad. The entire book was narrated in a monotone voice. Every character had the same voice with almost no difference or affliction. There were large pauses between sentences / sequences which break the listener's attention to the story.

The story itself is very slow. Nothing interesting happens until very late in the story. I wish the main event had started a bunch of chapters earlier to capture user interest.

Very Creepy!

This is a difficult book for me to rate and review.

Dwelling has the potential to be a very compelling novel, however the writing style wasn't really to my taste and the narration didn't help.

For me, the flow of the story was a little too disjointed which made it a little hard to follow whose point of view it was currently on. The story switches POV mainly between the 4 remaining friends; Maggie, Jonathan, Jake and Bobby, with a couple flashback characters thrown in.

There is a high creep factor that makes you sit on the edge of your seat waiting to see what the evil entity is going to do next. That part of the story was excellent!

This is the first book in a trilogy so it ends on a pretty big cliffhanger.

The narrator Rick Gregory was rather poor. A lot of mispronounced words, slightly monotone and a lot of pauses for no reason.

In my opinion, Dwelling would have been much easier to follow with a narrator that could give each character a different voice since there were so many different points of view.

A great start to a chilling tale

Dwelling was told through modern day narration and flashbacks. As the tales begin to weave together and the over arching story begins to take shape, you cant help but get the feeling that this is going to not only be great, but it will also be big. Thomas S. Flowers has taken hold of the story and is telling it with great fervor. The darkness of the story is going to be dense and will make your skin crawl. The only complaint i have is the rest of the story is not available on Audible yet. I am very much looking forward to the next installments.

The Narrator was great. He is improving in his skills. I look forward to hearing more of his work.

Scary for real!

I loved this book. As a veteran of the Army, I could certainly connect with the characters and understand what they're going through. PTSD is scary stuff for sure, but combine that with the imagination of Thomas Flowers and you get one creepy story! I'm looking forward to the rest of the series. Excellent narration by Rick Gregory!

The devastations of war!

You got to get into the minds of a war veterans. You could see how they suffered from PTSD.

Too much strong language for my liking.

Narrator a bit monotone.
