Having read all of the prior Richard Castle novels, both the Nikki Heat ones and Derrick Storm ones, and rated all prior ones 4 stars, I never believed I would give any future one 5 stars, but Driving Heat deserves 5 stars to my surprise. This is a seriously good murder mystery. My review headline is a line from the novel.
Most people who started reading the the Nikki Heat series early are well aware that Richard Castle is a fictional novelist character on ABC's TV show "Castle". Castle joins with NYC police detective Kate Beckett to solve murder mysteries. The couple is now married. Much of the charm of the TV show is the interplay of the Castle and Beckett characters. The Nikki Heat books have been mentioned during Castle episodes as the books are released.. Detective Nikki heat is detective Kate Beckett and journalist Jameson Rook is novelist Richard Castle.
The Castle TV show is off to a slowest/worst start ever early in the 2015-2016 TV season. It is ironic that the best Nikki Heat novel, Driving Heat, was introduced just as the TV program shows signs of circling the drain. I do enjoy the Castle TV show and hope that it recovers the charm that made it successful.

This is the seventh Nikki Heat novel written under the pseudonym of Richard Castle and while it doesn't break any new ground; what it does, it does well. The books are filled with action; unlike far too many contemporary novels it doesn't linger on what has happened previously or may happen in the future or the general condition of anyone's bellybutton or psyche. For a complex, fast moving story there are no highly improbable "wait a minute I gotta call bullshit on that" plot lines. The Nikki Heat series isn't great fiction but the author invariably relates a fast paced narrative with no shortage of action. I have no problem recommending the entire series.
