Publisher's summary

Hired to prove infidelity in an heiress' marriage, Stone Barrington goes undercover. But the work turns dirty - and catastrophic - when the errant husband is found dead, and the other woman disappears without a trace. Now Stone must clear his own good name and find a killer hiding among the glitterati of New York's high society.

Enter Carpenter - the beautiful British intelligence agent first encountered in The Short Forever - who has arrived in New York to begin an investigation of her own. Stone suspects that her case is strangely connected to the dead husband. And he and Dino, his former NYPD partner, are set to face the most bizarre and challenging assignment of their very colorful careers.

Horrible and Depressing

Too many people die. Too much killing and the entire group is stupid including Stone and Dino. Tony Roberts performance is as usual excellent very few mistakes. This story drags on to continue the killing. This time at least Stone doesn’t get wealthier because of deaths he and his cohorts should have prevented. The villain would have killed more people and made her escape according to the way the story was told. Mr Woods backed the story into a corner and he had to drag this dog out to escape it. I never like the inter police rivalry angles real or imagined. He made the FBI look like incompetent boobs very lame writing. Yes, every agency wants credit and to look good. And no group wants to take the blame when things go wrong. Stone is made to look like someone with a strange sense of conscious. He is in on the hunt for the killer but doesn’t want her killed. He carries Dino’s gun but is written as if he won’t shoot the villain in spite of all the people she kills. Plenty of innocent people are killed along the way. One would think that even if he empathizes with the killer his desire for justice and to prevent others from being killed would have allowed him to on the side of stopping the killer with a bullet. He manages to carry this odd unrealistic thought process follows him forward in the series. He is more dangerous than the people he chases. He wants others to do the dirty work so he can keep his hands clean. Writers are allowed lots of room for poetic license when telling their tales but sometimes they go too far this is one of those times. My best advice is to skip this one. He writes much better stories in the future and in the past.

Review of Stuart Woods’ “Dirty Work”

I like all of the Stone Barrington stories but this was not one of the best. He usually has happier endings but not this one. I assume that Stone and Felicity will make up in a future book. I would prefer the “F” word not be mentioned so often but I guess this is typical language in NY. I will look forward to the next one. Don Pearce
